Haven’t I asked that Sun get behind this kind of activity repeatedly over the last 3 years? With a Java-based console? Supporting independent developers? etc?

Oh… really a smart move my microsoft (you don’t see that every day).
Hope we get something like that for Java, too. Shouldn’t be too difficult with the next generation (more ram and all internet stuff). Piece of a cake if Sun starts doing something in that direction.
This sort of thing doesn’t happen overnight… trouble is they’ve had 3 years to sort it out. You can bet M$ started this strategy several years ago and it’s only just coming together. It staggers me sometimes the lack of foresight that Sun have had in this area. The GTG was only formed in very recent history and there’s still bugger all to show for it (unsurprisingly).

Therefore I said “next generation” and I really mean the next one
Xbox2, PS3(cell) and Game… uh… sphere ;D
PS2 would be to painfull anyways, the cube lacks internet stuff (but there’s at least opengl) and the xbox… well could be quite ok there, but that system isn’t my cup of coffee (and it comes w/o opengl support, doesn’t it?).
Since we can’t change the past we might just try the other direction on the timeline.
I’m guessing we almost have that if there will ever be a java + jws + opengl for consoles. I’m having a faint hope for java & friends on xbox, but maybe I’m being utterly naive now
It’ll happen but only if Sun makes it happen, aggressively. But where’s their incentive to get on Xbox?

…where’s the GTG’s budget to do anything here?
Looking back over the last 24 months, I get the impression that all the GTG guys can do is blow hot air at Sony, MS, et al and hope some of it diffuses into the heads of some people somewhere and convinces them to make their own minds up to do something. The GTG has no power of their own, except to lobby (is this fair/accurate? Tis the impression I’ve got. And not forgetting that the power-to-lobby publically and loudly is a big step forward compared to 3 years ago)
i.e. for Sun to act significantly on something like this would require serious mahola. Although the company has way more cash than it can spend, the corporate strategy is currently (for whatever reason - presumably the board have some Grand Plan with the benefit of all their experience and skill etc, for which that cash is an integral part) to hoard cash not spend it.
So, in theory, Sun could make huge waves here. But, in theory, the GTG could not - because the GTG has relatively little money / resource (when compared to how much cash and/or leverage to re-deploy sun JVM engineers you need for something like this). Bear in mind that the GTG as a division within the corporate beast is itself barely a toddler, and there’s never been a public spearheading champion (by which I mean someone at board level) for the GTG (although there have been champions, they seem to be only speaking internally, not blabbing to the world, so obviously there’s no-one really sticking their neck out too far here…). Yes, there are board members within Sun who clearly approve of and back the GTG. No, none of them have staked their own reputations on it. Yet.
