Meteor Threat - 3D Applet Game (java 1.1 compatible)

I recently finished a small Applet-game, and having found much useful info about java-programming on these boards, thought that maybe some people here might give feedback about it. The only plugin required is the JVM. The Applet is playable at:

The game is sort of a mix of Asteroids and Missile Command, with gravity playing an important part. The graphics are 3D, but the gameplay is traditional 2D. The game uses the IDX3D engine for graphics and Thinlet for the menus.

The game has been tested with a few browsers and JVMs, and it should be compatible with everything up from 1.1 (Microsoft IE’s default VM). If however there are any problems running it, please tell.

Here’s a screenshot:

Great! ;D

~25 fps stable without a.a., ~10 with a.a.
in an amd athlon@1.3, java 1.5, ubuntu linux

Worked fine here - 2.8GHz Pentium + ATI9200 + Java 1.5

I liked the different meteor masses & the physical interactions.

Wooo! Nice game…Had me playing for quite a while actually. Nice concept. Cant see anything wrong about it really, other than its weird that the entire earth only has 3 missile lauchers

Great job.

cool game… graphics however, are amazing! don’t think I’ve seen something software rendered and running that fast before. Cool stuff.

I get about 45fps here btw (amd64 2800+ nvidia 5200).

It looks fantastic and I like the gravity aspects. The software 3D renderer works great! (getting about 45fps).
However, I feel that there’s room for improvement in the playability aspect (it got boring after a while):

  • More shots at a time for faster gameplay, but a limited supply of missiles (a la missile command)
  • Add some aliens to shoot.
  • Let some meteors (the bigger ones) break in smaller parts when you shoot them (a la asteroids).

Great job!

Good looking game indeed. Ran fine in both winXP SP2 and Mandriva Linux 2006 beta3, on a athlon2.0ghz, gforce4 and jre1.5.0_04. The FPS counter fluctuated between 40-55 but the graphics was smoth all the time.

Erikds suggestions seems like god additions to make the game more intresting, It didn’t seem like the difficulty increased that much either, maybe you could do some kind of a attack wave system, with larger and larger attack waves.

Good work!

AMAZING! :o Ran at a pretty consistant 33fps with the aa enabled! Great gameplay, absoulutely beautiful graphics and very nice physics! Great work!

Really fun game! Thank you.

Wow! I like it.

Great game. Now I know where to go to relieve some stress!

Thank you for the comments! Glad you liked the game.

I agree that more variety would improve the gameplay, unfortunately I don’t think I’ll have much time to work on this game in the near future. I did however update the game so that the speed increases while you play. This should provide an increasing difficulty level, and hopefully a more challenging game. This feature was also in the original Applet, but the increase was really slow, so nobody probably noticed it.

Also good to hear that the software renderer works fast and smooth enough on different systems.

It’s a neat game … although I’d like to see the planet blow up at the end. Yes I’m a mean bastard :stuck_out_tongue: The software 3d looks great, too.

::looks at highscores:: wow, some people must’ve been really bored at work

My rig : Win2k, Athlon XP 2500+, JRE 1.5.0_04, Radeon 9700 Pro.
