Marine Origins

Hey Everyone,

This is a game that a few friends and myself have been working on for a competition here in Ireland. We thought we would share it with you guys. It still needs some finishing touches for the contest but here it is to play.

So the contest had a theme based around “Marine Science” and things of that nature. The three topic were Renewable Energy, Water Pollution, Climate Change.

The game story line goes like this. The main character, Thomson Montgomery lives on an island were he doesn’t treat it to great. He is sent to another island using the kings teleporter. The island he is sent to is in need of some drastic help. So he roams the depths of the sea and fights off enemies but also has to do some tasks.

I wouldn’t mind some feed back if possible. It’s our first game we have actually finished. which is a plus

Player Controls:
AD or Arrows to Move
Space or Up Arrow to Jump
Q to drink health potions
mouse to shoot
(Possible a few more)

Thanks Everyone,

Looks nice - a cool concept as well. Although maybe you should be stunning/tranquilizing the marine life instead of killing it.

Haha yeah good point

OK, having just played I have some thoughts.

  • The Options button doesn’t do anything. Don’t pretend to have options when you don’t.
  • It took me about a minute to realize that you can unlimited (except by Oxygen) jump, maybe have a note about that.
  • It took me even longer to realize that the Oxygen regenerated back up to 50% on its own, so ditto
  • After I figured these two out, the game became VERY easy. I just walked through the levels only taking hits when I couldn’t be bothered to wait for the falling rocks. Even on the last timed level, I finished with about 4-5 mins to spare.
  • “Thompson learned all he could about how to care for islands” - What I learnt was that you can get rid of rubbish dumps by shooting harpoons at them. Maybe you could have him cleaning them up, which takes time and then there are jellyfish spawning whilst he does it
  • On the last level (something like) “…But hurry.” Why? It made no sense whatsoever. There are all sorts of reasons - maybe a storm is comping which will break the teleporter and spread all the rubbish all over the place etc.
  • The game never progressed or got harder. After the first level there were some blue jellyfish who I assumed would be harder to kill or have different strategies or whatever but they were exactly the same in all but colour.
  • A couple of bugs (I wouldn’t call them bugs but…) on the last level. Firstly all the turbines say “on” when they aren’t. Secondly there is a message on the right saying “Nuclear Power Off” and I wan’t sure what it meant. Presumably isn’t supposed to be there.

Thanks very much for the feedback

Make the intro skippable, it really is boring to watch that text float up for a minute.

I ran the game on Linux, unfortunately it crashed when trying to pick up that crossbow thing.
I guess that was due to a soundeffect.
Unfortunately there was no exception shown in the commandshell.
