Mam Bow 2 - Retro Space Shooter - Sneak Preview now on Google Play

Hi,

I started working on an port to Android from a game my brother made a couple of years ago for the MSX.
I thought maybe it would be cool to start logging the process here, even though the development is already far in.
Here’s a peak into wht level 1 is gonna look like.
(which for the biggest part will be a copy of the original)
The game slowed down heavily after a while due to the screenrecording software btw.

I made a start at creating a GUI for the android device. I can move around, pause & toggle autofire using touch input.
Graphic design for the GUI will be reworked ofcourse.

I made some inital movement patterns for the different enemy types & enemies aren’t shooting back yet, so that still needs to be done.
I’m planning to keep this updated every couple of days.

So it’s been more than a week since my last post.

In the mean time I’ve been able to do a decent amount of coding on the game.

I added the maps for level 3 & 9 and all enemies for level 3 are more or less done.
Level 1 now has a background animation for the pre-cave part as well as randomized astroid debris flying in from the back that needs to be evaded.
Furthermore: enemies are now spawning powerup pods which can be taken to increase speed, increase strength of the ships weapon, add missiles and options to your arsenal and change projectiles.
Weapon system is not fully finished yet, but basics have been made.
I also added a splashscreen with the norakomi logo & a simple menuscreen.

The screenrecording has been improved slightly.

Here’s another peak into level 1:
Still a video on the same level. Next one will be from another level.

So the next important steps:

  • add enemies for level 9
  • add end-boss for levels 1,3 & 9
  • create GUI for touch devices
  • create a settings screen

very nice!

id like to play it to give feed back.

love me some oldschool plane shooters (i miss you Raiden :’( )

Great. Would be nice to get some feedback on game play, etc.
As soon as a playable version is ready I’ll send u a message and post it here anyway for anyone who wants to try it.

Looking really nice! Would love to play this when it is ready

Sure! Will send you a message as well as soon as it’s done.

Boss for level 3 is as good as done.
Multiple scrolling layers; a fade out of part of the map and a fade in for a new background;
The snakeballs spawn randomly.

I still have to finetune some stuff like different scrolling speeds, enemy health, spawn-“speed” of snakeballs & a killanimation + transition to next screen when you kill the enemy.
This is what it looks like now:

I started working on the UI and created a first version of a settingsScreen today for adjusting sound fx, music and other stuff.

And if anyone is interested what the code looks like I dumped it in the pastebin:

Initially I wanted to use LibGDX’s ImageButton, but could figure out how to get it working, so eventually I found another way to do it using buttonStyle.
I created a post in the Newbie section. If you want to spread some knowledge I’d love to know how I could have done it differently and/or better:

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to put in some work on Mam Bow 2.
Finally got 2 levels done and hope to upload the third level soonish.
It even available to test and play on Google Play.

Still a bunch of stuff needs to be done.
I’m gonna work on the on screen controller and a bunch of graphics (level & mode selection screens) need to be done, but I’m already happy with the current result.

Credits to JGO for helping me learn a lot about java game development. (9 months ago i believe I didn’t even know what an integer or a float was :-)…)

Please download it and let me know what you think.

I like the oldschool graphics. You made them?

No, my brother did almost all of them. He reworked the graphics from a bunch of old school video games into these.
He made the “original” Manbow 2 that got published in 2007 for the MSX computer (http://www.msx.org/articles/manbow-2) and all the music is originally made by him.
I think he made a pretty awesome soundtrack. (http://www.msx.org/news/music/en/manbow-2-songs-added-downloads)

He wrote the game in MSX assembler language & I’ve been working and doing all the coding for the java version.
So all assets we’re more or less done when i started. I just needed to convert and rework everything to modern day standards

I updated Mam Bow 2 with an improved Graphical User Interface , switchable left/right handed touch controllers and added level 9 beta today.
Version 1.04 - with level 9 included - should be downloadable from Google Play within a couple of hours…

Have a look & let me know what you think.
