As I understand it, SGS is just the networking and basic framework for an MMO game, and does not include the graphics engine or anything along those lines. What else would an MMO development team need other than SGS to fully develop an MMO game? And what things would be appropriate for use with it? Thank you.
Well I am far from expert but I am very happy that SGS gives only good networking and not some overbundled package so we can use it with whatever we want. There are allready many graphics adn game packages to do you the 3d or 2d graphics in java… Like JME, jPCT, Xith3d, LWJGL, JOGL and GTGE, Slick, Java2D… for 2d
The initial statement is wrong and a common misconception.
Communication is the smallest, easiest part of the problems Darkstar solves.
Please see the FAQ.
Would Darkstar be able to effectively interface with, say, Multiverse?
We are client agnostic so there is no reason we could not talk to the Multiverse client.
At the present however Multiverse has its own server technology. Were they to re-write their serves as Darkstar apps, then yes they would run on top of Darkstar (and gain all the Darkstar advantages.) Otherwise no.
Unreal engine anyone?
I wanted to do a ‘small’ project to check out the feastability of it, but never had the time. Now with that opensource announcement and NCsoft adopting it (with there lineage and others in there portfolio.) it pritty obvious that they would combine the inhouse knowlage of UE there skill in adopting the engine to work with a backend that supports MMO-games.
with sun to support the backend and epic supporting the client graphical engine(and tools!) you got a pritty sweet deal.
…but I’m just guessing… ;D
