Looking for beta testers...

I’m looking for some players to test a 2-player strategy game. The gameplay is similar to chess, except that you construct an army from a selection of units with a variety of stats and abilities.

The game requires at least 2 players to be online to play. To assist in finding opponents, I’m scheduling official play times, but feel free to play at any time.

The web address is http://www.catluck.com/leopold

The official play times (PST) are
10-11am, 2-3pm, 7-8pm, 10-11pm

i managed to run the program … but the screens did not draw properly

:frowning:

JMG

Not bad, not bad at all

Only, two suggestions: make a screen where you can choose an opponent or see if someone is online, and it really isn’t fair when you are playing the person who made the game >:(

But overall good

Was the text displaced and colored strangely?
If this is your problem, I’ve seen this on a couple of machines, and I think it has to do with the game selecting a weird refresh rate. Check to see if your monitor driver is up to date.

Thanks. The reason I don’t have an opponent selector, is that I’m afraid players are going to abuse the rating system by playing against dummy accounts. Showing them how many people total are online isn’t a bad idea at all though, thanks.

For some reason your webstart setup and my browser (Mozilla Firebird) don’t get along. It kept insisting I install webstart. I had to grab the jnlp and launch it from my computer.

I couldn’t find anyone online to play against, but I do have one very minor suggestion. When building your army give people a quantity option or something like that so people can say deploy 5 archers in one operation.

Mozilla doesn’t support the Javascript Webstart Detection code. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS OFFER A WAY TO DOWNLOAD EVEN IF THE CODE FAILS. Downloading webstart links should fall under “strong suggestion”.

I’ve put in a link to directly download the .jar. Thanks for the suggestion.

I know this isn’t java related, but if anyone could check my forum, I’d appreciate it. Someone wrote on there that they were getting cgi forbidded errors instead of being able to read anyone’s post.

I noticed in the logs that of all the people who tried the game out, only a couple people actually found opponents to play against.

So, I’ve put in a windowed mode and a sound effect for when an opponent is found. Now, if you want to play someone bad enough, you can minimize the game, and wait for someone to come on.
