Linux MMOG players "best customers"

About a year and a half ago the tiny independent game developer eGenesis decided to create a Linux port of its massively multiplayer online game, A Tale In The Desert. The game was designed to appeal to creative people looking for an alternative to games that focused on destruction. The company’s initial thinking was that it might get a few incremental sales and garner goodwill with the community by supporting Linux. What eGenesis discovered was that, per user, Linux gamers were and continue to be their best customers. Each account, on average, has generated twice as much revenue as those of Windows gamers.

Wow, a business model that works on Linux! Somebody pinch me!

I had 1 sale on Linux  That’s about 1% of my total sales :stuck_out_tongue: so I guess that stacks up well.

…in full knowledge of which I was thence interested by this article

It’s really quite surprising. The real question is: is it an anomaly or can it be repeated, and if so, in what markets?

[quote]Unfortunately for eGenesis, the total number of players on Linux is dramatically smaller than the number on Windows, representing less than 1% of total players – 101 subscribers out of 7,063.

The 1% figure is the problem of course. 7k subscribers though - excellent!

I have a 50% installation failure rate on Linux, versus 35% on Windows and 1% on MacOS X. That’s pretty poor and something that really needs to be addressed - and not by me. (Failures are 99% caused by OpenGL problems)

My Linux conversion rate is quite pitiful; I’ll get some updated figures this weekend and see how it’s doing. To my knowledge I’ve still only had 1 Linux conversion in a whole year.

Plus, Macs suck ass

yeah they do…gotta love linux

What’s that smell?
