Linux Java for AMD64

The Blackdown-Projekt released a first version of their Java 1.4.2 Linux port, wich supports AMD64 CPUs, too (besides the usual x86 CPUs). The new blackdown package is based on Sun’s Java version 1.4.2_03 (that’s the new one with updated root certificates from VeriSign).

The changes are listed on Blackdown’s Status Page. The awesome part: Graphic operations are up to 80% faster! (Sweet! ;D) Also you can check out the requirements for using that java port on AMD64 systems on that status page.

Crappy biased translation by me

Thanks for the great news.

I only switched to Sun’s Java version, because of the hidden high-res-timer. Does the Blackdown version include it? Probably not.

That’s a bit of a weird reason to switch!
Why not just use the LWJGL timer?

Heh dunno. But I think the chances are pretty low. Afterall the hires timer is a hidden just for testing thingy wich will disappear with the next version.

However, I can’t test it. I don’t have a 64bit system… but it’s good to know that it would be benefitical even if I switch right now

Xith3D used the hidden timer for a while, but it has gone now. After all I have several JREs installed and “switching” is just a matter of selecting the default one.

I don’t have an AMD64 system either. If I need a new PC (not within the next months) I’ll probably buy such a CPU. They are produced just some kilometres away from here (like the Infineon chips). ;D
