Limited Force

Hello Everyone,

i started this project 3 month ago. it’s my first real programming project and i’m fairly pleased with the progress.

The game itself is heavily inspired by pax britannica, one of my favourite games to play on smartphone.
which is a great game but it would be even better with more content available. so i want to provide many ships, items, weapons, gamemodes and missions.

planned features:

  • many more ships & weapons
  • local multiplayer

It will be released later this year and is playable on desktop and android.

this video list shows the development stages from earliest slick2d prototype to the current version:

Your game looks very cool. Excellent presentation, and smooth motion and graphics.Looks very interesting. Reminds me of playing Homeworld! Wil be interesting to see how this develops.

All it be rpg, shooter, or strategy? Or all?

OH MY GOSH!!! GRAPHICS!
Cudos, I have never seen 2d graphics this good! I love the menu interface!

Wow that looks impressive for only 3 months! It also very much reminds me of Starsector, also made in Java+LWJGL by our own avm1979

That is beautiful! It always makes me makes me feel happy when ships go and do their thing so smoothly. I am going to be following this thread for sure.

thanks
the games main focus will be capitalship vs capitalship(s) battles where you outsmart your opponent by choosing proper unit and weapon composition.
there will be a galaxy system with many various worlds, enemies etc. but the story won’t be too huge.
i’m thinking about a game mode where you actually control a little spaceship in the battle. it’s already semi-implemented but i probably have to scrap it because it doesn’t fit 100% and i want it to be playable on android too.
i want to provide a large amount of spaceships and weapons to choose and if there is enough time i want to implement internet-multiplayer.
but it’s my first game and my first priority is to actually finish it.

thanks a lot

thanks  i played starfarer starsector, it’s a REALLY great game.

thanks

update:

  • implemented a score & save system.
  • created a new capital ship which is actually a space station and a new fighter
  • implemented a proper mission selection system

because i can’t draw but have some (beginner) experience with 3d modeling every spaceship is actually a 3d-model.
this helps me a lot with the animations too.
i made some really simple basic models and applied some greeble.
here are a few examples: http://imgur.com/a/7Qmtp#0

new screen:

I just uploaded a new gameplay video:

  • new endless mode concept in addition to normal missions
  • zoom available
  • weapon shoot animations
  • ability to move ships and a fancy shockwave shader
  • sound effects and music

in the next weeks i will try to implement local and internet multiplayer.

I think my favorite ting about this thread is learning the word “greeble”. The only show I remember that avoided really gratuitous greeble was Babylon 5, and whaddya know, the station looked as plastic and hokey as JMS’s writing (zing).

Anyway the whole thing reminds me a bit of Netrek and believe me that’s a compliment. The station does look a bit like a sitting duck though, whereas in netrek they’re Unstoppable Badass Fully Operational Battle Stations.

yeah, without randomly picking up the greeble term the game would look a lot more hideous. ;D

Netrek is still played. really impressive. i will check it out.
