Let's Have Some Fun

Ok, the evil  Spaceghost has dropped enough hints that there will be some really interesting announcements at Java One.

Let’s see if we can guess what they will be.

Post your predictions here. Try to be specific. In a few weeks we will know if we got anything right.

Oh yeah… Spaceghost or anyone with inside info can’t play  (don’t violate any NDAs)

My guess…

Along with a better website for JavaGaming.org with much more than just a message board, an Early Access version of the JSR-134 reference implementation will be made available. The game contest that was mentioned here earlier will become a Sun sponsored contest to make a game with it.

How’s that for speculation?

Well, it is already official that Sun will show a new development tool aimed at Visual Basic programmers and the likes.
We also know that this forum will be revamped.
We can easily extrapolate that the JDK 1.4 will be delivered as a final version.
My guess is Sun is going to show an OpenGL java library and there will be a deal announced with a company like Sony or Nokia to support java games on their platform (?).
Place your bets.

I’m betting with altair. I think he’s dead on.

Pretty sure about the website redesign. Also seriously wondering if they have a (secret) OpenGL binding in the works or already done…

And we’ve known about the deal with Sony for almost what, two years now? Let’s see if it produces something now…

I’m betting along the lines of swpalmer. At least I hope he’s right

javagaming will become more than just the forums - added will be some out of date articles that existed before, and a news page that basically mirrors that of the other major gaming/development sites.

A reference JSR-134 will be announced, but only avalible to those who know Suns directors personally, or who work at fullsail. It will be declared the greatest thing since sliced bread, and will do my taxes for me. However no-one will actually be able to get their hands on it. It will include bindings to openGL and the Havok physics engine, yet be altered in subtle but fundamental ways. Despite (or because of) being fully intergratable with AWT and Swing, it will run like a dog and be impractiacal for any real game use.

A new JSR will be rasied to fix and extend the newly announced game API. New features to add include fixing world hunger, and a cure for AIDS.

Spaceghost will astound everyone with his working replica of a laser implanted within his forearm, and the discovery of a new alien species on Jupiter which bears a stricking resemblance to Zorak. Sun vows to be the first software company to reach Jupiter with a manned expidition.

Sony announces that the PS4 will run a modified version of JRE v1.1. Release date still unknown.

And now OT, I shall spank you smartly with my spank ray.

ZOORRRINNNGGGG—SLAP!

So you don’t deny it then

I’m hoping for all the things we were disappointed with at the Millenium: sky-cars, everyone wearing tinfoil, all food available in pill form, people living on the moon, you know - nothing too fancy.

  1. Web site gets more than just a face lift and a place to download files. It also has a full time paid person to coordinate/create/sort/spindel and mutilate tutorial/demo code. Create and maintain a huge FAQ page. A forum is great for asking a “new” question, a FAQ page is what we really need. Or perhaps a Wiki area with that full time paid guy keeping it in order.

  2. Tzan gets hired by javagaming for misc organizational duties.

  3. Sun creates low cost/free java server program hosting.

  4. Oh yeah and they release more code, what Orangy said haha! ;D

Too late, looks like Microsoft beat them to it

One of the sessions of the coming JavaOne:

“Advanced OpenGL® for the JavaTM Platform TS-2125”

See http://servlet.java.sun.com/javaone/sf2003/conf/sessions/48-all-regular.en.jsp

:-X :-X :-X

if it have no official & debugged linux support like Java3D I go to pyton or back to C++ ;D

So… How did we do? Well it looks like vrm will be crossing over to the dark side, swpalmer was shockingly close except for the competition, and I was way off. Except that jogl/joal/jinput could be seen as a reference JSR-134, but no-one has claimed it will do my taxes for me yet.

Theres still time though

And wouldn’t you know it a competition was something that was discussed publicly here well before JavaOne.

Hey SG, are we gonna try to do the competition thing with some nice prizes from Sun?
