Legends of Fore Website

Here’s a sci-fi rogue like designed for mobile platforms. I’m hoping to make it as big as it’s spiritual predecessor Legends of Yore. The game has you playing a hero exploring the galaxy one mission at a time. You can choose a class and a race, equip some weapons and get out there, make some money and maybe find a new planet or two.

A couple of screenshots:

And an early test video:

There’s a very early playable demo here in LibGDX GWT Backend version - that means you’ll need a decent browser to try it:

Try the Early Demo

There’s loads more to do as you can imagine include:

  • Loads of new missions, items, locations, monsters, etc etc
  • Online save/load
  • Player ship buying and travelling
  • Hiring mercs to help on the mission
  • Implants
  • Weapons Mods
  • Psi powers

I’m hoping to release for Desktop, iOS and Android - with maybe Web too if I can think that out straight.

Even though it’s early, any and all feedback richly appreciated!

Cheers,

Kev

Feels pretty smooth already. The focus on ranged combat is different, it might benefit from some simple cover mechanic where you get cover from hiding behind a corner or a crate, or some other ways to allow the player to make some simple tactical decisions, rather than both fighters standing in the open and shooting at each other until one dies. The ability to effectively retreat to a stronger position, both for player and enemies, would also make combat a lot more interesting.

Real fun and quite addictive. I remember playing The Legends of Yore before I even knew what programming was.

Finished both missions, only flaw IMO is the health
Made it a little more intense on the 2nd mission having to watch your health though :stuck_out_tongue:

Few minor bugs I found:
1). Back buffer doesn’t clear properly? (Occurs on index.html) see image link below
2). Text piles up @ the top of the screen, some times duplicates. (Duplicate displayed upon new game) see image link below
-> Bug while using Mozilla Firefox Web Browser

Things to add maybe:
Make it where when a interface is open, clicking the game world will close it and follow through with the action. (walking/clicked object etc)
Moving animations, the movement the screen performs is painful to my eyes XD

Besides the x2 bugs i found the game looks nice and polished, good job kev.

Thanks for the feedback and support guys!

I’ll check out the bugs and thanks for the suggestions!

Cheers,

Kev

Nice job! The art is solid, and it is indeed very fun.

I would add is smoother movement though, as opposed to teleportation from tile to tile. Kind of like Bump.

This looks like quality stuff so far

I agree about the movement, it’s quite distracting. Also does this engine allow zoom out so you could get your bearings a bit more easily? I can see there’s a minimap but still being restricted to the tight FOV is quite claustrophobic. Zoom-out might also help make retracing steps through explored areas less boring. I don’t know how big these maps will get though?

Finally the player route-finding seems a bit weird - definitely not taking the shortest path anyway!

Yep, route finding has a couple of things applied to it at the moment that lead to other routes. Not too distracting atm I hope!

Working on movement at the moment. Zoom out also something I’ve been planning to add - maybe only two steps though, I don’t want you seeing the whole map all the time.

In other news for those who wanted a desktop version this:

http://www.legendsoffore.com/downloads/launch.jar

Should work. Run it with:

java -jar launch.jar

It’ll keep itself updated with the latest version of Legends of Fore too.

Cheers,

Kev

Loading/saving is sexy kev ::slight_smile:

And now I can play the game without the back buffer issue ;D ;D

Thanks kev, definitely a game I’ll keep checking in on and playing new updates

EDIT: If you need a new-version tester I’m your guy XD

Found a typo. I believe that “…NEED DOING, PICK ON…” is supposed to be “…NEED DOING, PICK ONE

I loved Legends of Yore, I played the hell out of it on iOS long before I knew anything about Java programming, Slick2D, or JGO. Even more hilarious, I started using Slick2D, not realizing this “KevGlass” dude all over the .class file descriptions was the guy who made Legends of Yore. …and then I ran off and joined a random good looking community, and oh look. KevGlass is here!

Such a strange string of coincidences. But I guess it’s only natural Java devs all eventually end up here.

But anyway; Long silly story short, looking forward to Sci-Fi Legends of Yore Legends of Fore.

Offtopic: there are surprisingly many potential successors following the pattern: Legends of *ore. So many themes, too!

Or just: Legend’s of Ore, it’s not just your average Minecraft clone!

Yep, looking forward to writing Legends of Gore too

I’ve put the early access build up at on Google Play:

For those who want to try Android out.

Kev

Also, On mission 3, I didn’t play 1 or 2 but, I think mission 3 you can’t beat, I cant find the portal to get back to the world

Just realised this should have been posted in WIP - could someone move it for me please?
