legal question

here is a hypothesis:
i create a game (applet) and make people pay for an account to play (2USD/month)
the game is a cut down version of the Wizards of Coast Dungeons and Dragons.
i even advertise it as such, in order to get more people to play it

what kind of legal issues are there?
i mean, do i have to pay them for a license?
(or ask them for one?)

Wizards of the Coast wait til you’re successful and then rape your profits by sueing the hell out of you.

+1

if i were them, i would do the same

thank you for your quick answers

I’m no lawyer but if you stick to the SRD it might be legal, you should probably read it close to be sure.

EDIT: here is a link to the license http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Gaming_License

Never assume. What’s legal is what a big expensive lawyer can prove in courts. Take a look at JK Rowling vs. The Harry Potter Lexicon, for example. Totally legal and yet he lost the case.

I hadn’t ever read it, just provided a link. My advise was meant specifically for d&d and information released under the open gaming license.

thank you for the link…
