JGears Demo and others fail in Solaris 10 (OpenGL 1.5)

I have an officemate using Solaris 10 on a Sun workstation (Ultra 45, either xvr300 or xvr600 graphics card…unsure) and the JGears demo does not run on his machine. When you start JGears it sometimes shows the gears in the view but they are not animating and the window does not react to mouse inputs, etc. Its as if the first rendering of the gears shows up but then it is just locked in place…in fact the gears don’t even appear round but can be stretched and sometimes the screen is just a mess of graphics artifacts.

Is this because he has OpenGL 1.5 on that machine?

I don’t know how good pbuffer support is on those cards, which is required for the GLJPanel and demos like JGears. On-screen rendering like the Gears and other demos should work.
