I don’t know about ‘favourite’ but there’s a tradeoff between features & size of installed user base.

1.4 (or later): Installed on the majority of machines.
1.5 (or later): Installed on some machines (e.g. Mac OSX 10.4 has 1.4.2)
1.6 (or later): Installed on a few programmers machines.

So for the widest audience, 1.4.2 is still the best bet and for that reason is still my favourite.
Release 1.5 has generics, which is a great improvement for creating customised collections and probably will be my favourite in about a years time.
