I have just recently started Java Game Programming and I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find a server host for them. Keep in mind I’m a poor college student so free is easier than pay.
Thanks

if you make em good enough we could incorporate them into GameLizard and give you a section of the forum for your games
You can get pretty usable webspace for something like 5¤/$ per month.
I pay 4.95¤ and got 500mb, 50gb traffic, php, mysql, ssi, zillions of subdomains and email addresses… and I also can change some stuff via .htaccess
Well, there are of course even cheaper packs with some less features. And uhm… usually you get some usable webspace from your isp. Like 10mb, no real traffic limit… usually it’s without the neat things like php or htaccess, but all you need at the beginning is a correct jnlp mime type. It will be either already setup correctly or they will set it up for you (just politely ask for it).
JGF is about to unleash free hosting for all java games. There will be a slight relaxation of the current requirements, in that games that are known to be broken, or which don’t work properly on some platforms, will be finally allowed, but placed in a special area of their own until the authors fix the most serious bugs.
You can see the progress on development of the new version of JGF here:

I have an alpha of the new site running on my home network at the moment, but we need another $100 or so to pay for the new server (which comes with more bandwidth than you can possibly imagine :P). If you have just $5 to spare, throw it into the pot, and know that you’ll get that back many times over in terms of unlimited (*) free bandwidth over the next N years.
(*) - sensible conditions permitting. I would be shocked beyond belief if one person managed to seriously dent the terabyte monthly allowance…
50Gb traffic and MySQL is good for that price. Suggest you quote the URL, because I know a fair few people here would be interested. Just so long as the host is reliable (e.g. I’ve seen people quoting better that price, but for 95% reliability or so - i.e. days or weeks of expected downtime each year; bear in mind “weeks” can work out as “offline for more than half a day every single week” with no restitution possible…)
Suggest you quote the URL
I didn’t because their page is german

(* If my partner id is used, I get the setup fee minus vat. The price is the same.)
They guarantee 99% uptime and they had several downtimes two years ago. Well, things changed and they are really reliable nowadays. The support is also pretty good (like answering an email within 20mins at 3am)
I appreciate it.
Getting good is going to take a while, I’m still on the basic breakout/hangman games right now.
