Java Unlimited has been unleashed!

Well, though my signature has been saying “May 21” for the past month or so, it just so happens the 22nd is the official launch date!

So, what is Java Unlimited?
Java Unlimited is a freely-developed website with a focus for limited-size Java games that are usually inspired by the creative 4K contest. It is not another Java Games Factory! Java Games Factory is a general Java gaming site which features articles and tutorials for aspiring game programmers.

Not only is Java Unlimited inspired by contests, it also runs them. Java Unlimited has a full-featured game database which boasts an organized, automated game submission system specficically for contests. Anybody who wants to start a contest can simply contact me and their contest will be up and running without them having the headache of sorting through games that are submitted and whatnot.

Java Unlimited will be running the upcoming Java 4K contest this fall (unless mlk changes this, of course). Thankfully, unlike last year’s site, you no longer have to wait a whole week just for a list update!

Java Unlimited for the gamers
For those who don’t care about the contests that are run around here, have no fear. Java Unlimited’s master game list is for you. Browse through our growing collection of games that are submitted through contests (or by people who just want to showcase their games).

So, finally, I present the first release of Java Unlimited!

Coming soon to the site…
Obviously Java Unlimited is a young site with a few kinks to work out. Here’s a rough list for those who are curious (or want to help out):

[]Game Comments - just a simple comments board for each game to have so the author can get a good idea of how his game is doing
[
]Screenshot Gallery - one screenshot for a game isn’t enough. I’m coding a screenshot gallery so authors of games can provide more than the tiny 100x100 image that is really only meant for the game list.
[*]Finished 4K Archive - I managed to get all 50 of the games from the 2005 contest archived onto my server (so we don’t have to worry about 3rd party sites dieing out). I’m still working on finding the games from the previous 2 contests. If anyone can help out, please let me know!

Donations
I developed this entire site myself (so far), and I’m paying the hosting bill and such. Since I’m a high-school student with a very limited cash flow, donations of any amount (through paypal) would be greatly appreciated to help me keep the site going.

Currently, I’m looking for enough paypal donations to purchase a domain for the site (unlimited.woogley.net isn’t really a good domain for such an independent site). If you can help me out with this, please donate (there’s a paypal link on the site)! Thanks, and have fun!

Crikey, its looking sharp already!

All we need now is another game contest, LWJGL16k??!? (hint, hint!)

Great job!

Kev

Very professional look, particular the game management screens & the game submittal screen. I look forward to trying it.

Yes indeed. Are there any other rules except to use LWJGL and has to be less than or equal to 16k (16384 bytes)? How long do we have? Can we enter more then once? What is the minimum number of entries for Kev

Alan

/Edit

/ / / (see below) - The Java Unlimited site is aimed at contests so I’m not really off-topic, but I’ll see which thread is active before posting any more

Very nice!

Yes, Kev should be limited to an 8k lwjgl game  to make it fair for everyone else.

I have to say I have a game in mind to make for the 16k contest that is pretty ambitious; I don’t know if I can pull it off or not, but I’m going to try…

(Alan, you might ask those questions in the 16k thread…)

Very nice site :).

many thanks for comments

about the contest, I agree that we need to get it going… I’m dieing to set up a home page for it

I suggest that someone start a new thread (Alan maybe?) about the 16K cuz it doesn’t seem princec is interested in it anymore. See if you can write up an agreed rules draft and all that so we can get this started!

Well,

There’s still this thread:
http://www.java-gaming.org/cgi-bin/JGNetForums/YaBB.cgi?board=announcements;action=display;num=1106099913 although if the comp starts, we could start a new one headed up by the rules and duration.

Not sure about Cas ‘losing interest’. Is that a definite? I wouldn’t want to poach his comp. There’s also the issue of judging if i did that.

I’ve not lost interest, I just want to judge rather than enter, and I want to make sure the rules aren’t discouraging, and judged on what we want to highlight as the strengths of LWJGL. Seems to be going ok… the latest set of suggestions I made haven’t been shot down in flames yet…

Cas

(a little late but)
Cool, great stuff Woogley.

When is the LWJGL16k gonna start?! ;D

Thanks

Not sure, I hope it starts soon though, my site is ready to go

Excellent - there is something great that happens as a result of being forced to squeeze as much as possible into such a small space! Good work! Later on a JOGL 16K contest? Seeing as how we have LWJGL?

LWJGL 16K never launched. If you wanna start a JOGL contest, shoot me an email, I’m ready when you are.

woogley[at]gmail.com

I’m sure we’ll get round to it one day  The tripes must be heavy and the correct intonations made under the full moon etc.

Cas

Screw the 16k it’s time for the 4k contest again… Somebody should do that.

that’s already on schedule to run from November (or December) to February, with winners announced on March 1st.

it’s the most wonderful time of the year

* darkprophet is gettin excited for the 4K stuff

Bring on the 4k!

;D

Now what can I fit in 4K ;D

/Edit: Quite a lot actually ;D

/Edit: Sunday got spent writing this. It’s an executable jar, but may download as a .zip. Probably best not to comment until the compo gets underway and there’s a proper forum for it. (Hint Hint).

/Edit: There’s going to be a raycasting FPS too

Wow, that’s really amazing for 4k. I can see we’ll have a worthy new contender this year…
