Java Game Tome

Well, using LWJGL and JOGL isn’t platform-dependent is it? Seeing as they run everywhere.

Cas

I am working on it; the new Tome will be up in about 1 month…

My game uses JOGL and works fine under the 3 main families of operating system + Solaris. ;D

There are more people here to criticize what I did than people encouraging me and helping me when I was working on the Tome. I’m disappointed to see that SimonH was wrong, lots of people here don’t want to help each other, they prefer ruining the works of others, they put much energy into critics about the rules of the platform independence rather than into a solution to handle the screen size under 1280 * 1024 on the JGT. They put much energy to destroy than to build. You can be proud of yourselves.

Sorry, not true. Gouessej, I am glad that you wanted to build a site to showcase Java games and I really think your heart was in the right place. But you set up rules that you were unwilling to bend. Judging by the overwhelming response to this thread and others like it, the majority of people thought you were too restrictive, myself included. I don’t believe that people were out to destroy what you were doing, you just refused to accept any criticism without becoming combative. Obviously, there was a desire to ease the rules that some felt strongly about and they set off to create a place for this while you decided to throw your hands up and give up.

As for criticizing the site vs. helping to resolve a screen size issue on your site, well, sorry. It’s your site and no one is required to help you with the issues you had. If they felt strongly enough about it, they would have helped out just as members of this community have helped, and criticized, JGO over the years. Perhaps one of the problems was that there was no community ownership or input.

The fact is, you made rules that, judging by the results of your own poll, the majority of members here did not agree with. Or, at the very least, could see the rational for both sites to exist. Your effort is now marginalized as a result of not willing to put your rules up to a majority vote or bend them to meet a community’s needs. If you are unwilling to compromise, you can’t be surprised when someone takes issue with it and decides to do something else. And no, the incubator classification was not a compromise. It labeled anything in there as “lesser” than approved submissions.

I am getting tired of having to moderate this kind of discussion here. Please, no more attacks on the community just because they may disagree with you.

gouessej, you might need to realize that not everybody disagreeing with you is your enemy. you can get very emotional about certain points of view, and feeling rejected when others do not support you in your efforts.

teammates come and go, especially in the early stages of a project. nobody owes anybody anything here, and promised will be broken, because the only thing thats keeping the team together is a rough plan, about which one can change his mind, a certain amount of flexibility is be good for the team spirit - hardly anybody would like being forced into a situation where one guy dictates the rules - unless your paid and it happens to be your dayjob  but even then…

Rwaaarrrr!!! Hulk Smash!

Lots of anger going around, but to be fair, when the issue of cross platforming in games comes up, regardless of how or why it was introduced, a lot of anger and flaming is bound to come out as people are very strongly biased when it comes to their computers and their OS. It’s nothing personal, it’s just a very sensitive subject, and one that immediately jumps out at people, especially over something like screen resolutions :P.

Also, I have no ideas about potential solutions for the screen size problem, but I do have opinions about cross platforming so I am just contributing in what way I can, and unfortunately, that way is criticism. I am not out to ruin your work but rather to point out something that I think might have been holding it back. In the end, our comments are just suggestions and it is your choice about whether to give them any credence.

That’s not completely true, the incubator is the result of a discussion with some members, demonpants included. He thought that the rules were a bit too strict.

It is not so simple. I have been forced to give up as the conditions were not fulfilled. If the rules were less strict, my investment would have no meaning as I said.

Unfortunately, many programmers agree with my position even though it is not reflected in this poll but if you want, I can ask them to vote ;D

How did you gauge that opinion, if it wasn’t by statistics as with the vote here? 90% of people here are programmers, so it would seem to be a appropriate sample group.

This is why I thought you were getting stressed. People who are stressed and/or tired often snap at comments that had well meaning intentions.

If you can’t continue because kingaschi is going to do a new site and you don’t seem to be getting the agreement or support you expected here, I’d just leave it and move on to your more important projects. This thread isn’t doing anyone any good.

How about starting a new thread to tell us about the new project?

Kev

Only 28 people have voted here and I have received many feedbacks from French programmers that are not registered here (I gave them the advice to come here to share their experiences but they didn’t).

I think that I don’t have any choice. I spent some time to explain (by giving lots of details) why I disagree with kingaschi but he only said in an email that he wants to create a website with less restrictive rules:
“I would like to continue on the game site on my own. I want to do it
somewhat different from you had in mind. I want to make it less
restrictive when it comes to game listings.”
I thought that some people here would have tried to convince kingaschi to stop his project to avoid the split or at least they could have asked him to give more details about his motivations.

I know that I will receive a huge amount of negative feedback when I start this new thread. Therefore, I must get ready to argue and I mustn’t let anyone discourage me. Finally, I don’t want to be alone to defend this project and I don’t want to be alone to introduce it here, I have to find some people to defend the cause before starting this thread. I shouldn’t speak about it now, it is not the topic of this thread.

To conclude, I’m sorry for this disturbment. Maybe it would have been better to find an agreement with kingaschi according to many people here but when he spoke about creating his own website, his decision had already been made, I couldn’t change his mind, he only suggested me to keep the domain name, the template and the whole website if I wanted.

I’m guilty too, it depends on your viewpoint. I refuse to give up one of the principle of the Java Game Tome: promote only Java games that work on the 3 main families of operating system. Nobody could change my mind too.

Therefore, we were both stubborn, we couldn’t find a good compromise.

Finally, demonpants and kingaschi had known the rules since the start of the project. They had had several months to tell me that they disagree with me. demonpants did it once. I go on reproaching kingaschi for not having said it earlier, I still find this behavior irresponsible and it made me waste a lot of time. I don’t understand why he waited for so much time. I wish good luck to him for the “new” Java Game Tome. People against our vision (Java games that work on the 3 main families of operating system) won. You won only a battle, we might win the war. I won’t punish any player, whatever his favorite operating system…for a fair access to gaming, comrade
