Java Game Developer Needed for RPG Game

Greetings,

Dungeon Treasure(2006), a company specializing in the creation of Multiplayer RPG Dungeon Adventure Games seeks Java Expert with game experience.

We are currently developing our first game title and have a working alpha version of the game. Graphics, monsters, heroes, music, sfx, story, text is prepared if not already in place and working within the game. However, like any complex game project there are bugs, issues, usability issues and basic game improvements that must be corrected and upgraded. The game consists of 120 class files and is approx 30,000 lines of code. It is a First Person game view and has fairly complex levels of interaction that have been lost in many of todays games.

We currently have a dedicated graphic artist, sound/music person, two hero/monster creators, item creator, script writer, and 1 temporary programmer.

Here is the offer and the benefits of joining us:

-Direct % ownership of Dungeon Treasure thereby direct % of all profits from game launch and monthly subscriptions. Negotiable %.

-Programmer can offer ideas and have direct creative impact on game style, play, options, etc

If you are a person who has always wanted to work on an exciting game title and get involved with the creative aspects of game creation and not just the coding of it, this is the perfect job for you. We need your game playing experience, thoughts, ideas, and contribution.

Give us an opportunity to impress you.

Work from home, or join us in Los Angeles.

Please send all resumes, samples of work to: admin@dungeontreasure.com

Thank you,

L Kirschner
President
Dungeon Treasure

Is this a paid role or based on profit share, I can’t quite tell from the above?

Can you sponsor H1B?

Kev

Hello Kevglass,

We are unable to sponsor H1B at this time. However, you can work from your own office by telecommuting with our team.

As stated above, the candidate will receive DIRECT OWNERSHIP of Dungeon Treasure and thereby share in its profits from subscriptions and flat fees charged to players. This is a negotiable %. There is no salary position. Your job would be to take command of the existing code (game is 30,000 lines of Java) and bring the Alpha version of the game up to a more polished product ready for the market place. As well, we would be looking for the candidate to offer ideas on improvements to game mechanics, networking, game play, etc etc. This is a collaborative project. We are not starting from the beginning, we are attempting to bring in a full time candidate that would enjoy working with us to produce a finished product from a product that is near 95% complete. Once the initial product is built we would be looking to launch a line of additional products related to the initial game.

Thank you,

LK

You can’t really expect anybody working fulltime on a project with that little financial guarantees.

Sounds more like a hobby project to me (not trying to insult anybody).
If it is, you might find programmers by simply making the game open-source.
It might sound daunting, but you can be quite sure you get you project finished much earlier, having much more fun, and having more experience in programming as a team, which is much harder than having a very diverse group (like you have now) working together on art, story and models.

Hello Riven,

Im sure you are familiar with the hit game, “Runescape”. With over 5 million players now registered, and over 1 million paying customers each month they have clearly become very popular. This is a game written entirely in Java. The original version that inspired the final version was written by a single programmer and his brother who helped create the graphics.

I take this project very seriously and so do my dedicated team members. We are proud of the work we have accomplished. We are looking for a business partner who is also a good java programmer to grow this company. And that is admitedly more then just a JAVA programmer.

Thank you,

LK

The screenshots look awesome, are they really in-game? (I don’t see any HUD or something in the screens)

If you want to attract a business partner/java programmer, you might want to make things look more attractive by providing more details.
Maybe you could tell a bit more about:

  • In what range of ownership % should we think? (given that the game is already about 95% complete, I suppose one can’t expect more than 5% ?)
  • Does the company you might get ownership for already exist officially?
  • How much will the game cost?
  • How many paying customers are you expecting and how do you plan on getting enough paying customers to make it worthwhile for everyone?
  • What is the scheduled release date?
  • What technologies are used? (pure java, or does it use OpenGL somehow? which libraries?)

The thing with working for a percentage is it can make things look a bit ‘iffy’, as if you just can’t afford a good full-time developer because you’re not confident that the game will be a success. Runscape is a well known success story, but that’s hardly a guarantee for your game…
So I have to agree with Riven there; working full time for a percentage of a potential nothing is a bit much.

Still, like I said, the screenshots look amazing, so tell us more!

Hello ErikD,

Let me respond to your questions below:

*The screenshots look awesome, are they really in-game?

Yes, all shots shown on site are actual game environment with actual game creatures attacking player. We currently have 5 main types of environments completed with over 20 creatures ready to go and 6 hero types ready to go. Environments include: Jungle, interior of buildings, caves, mines, dungeons. The interface images will be added shortly. It was decided the game images would be far more interesting to post then the interface.

  • In what range of ownership % should we think?
  • We are willing to negotiate this number. Early estimate suggests 15%+ ownership to start.
  • Does the company you might get ownership for already exist officially?
  • DungeonTreasure will be listed as LLC or Inc shortly and candidate would receive notorized paperwork stating ownership %.
  • How much will the game cost?
Game subscription and intitial game activation rates will be competitive with marketplace. Likely $4.95 subscription monthly rate along with one time account activation fee of $7.95

  • How many paying customers are you expecting and how do you plan on getting enough paying customers to make it worthwhile for everyone?
Projection of game customers is likely to fall within 30,000+ paying customers within first 2 years.

  • What is the scheduled release date?
Release date is projected for Fall of 2009.

  • What technologies are used? (pure java, or does it use OpenGL somehow? which libraries?)
Currently the game is written in pure Java code. No openGL. This doesn’t mean 2nd generation games have to be written in Java. Would prefer C/C++ if possible.

I understand that a small contract fixed price and/or % ownership may not appear as attractive as other offers available. This is a job for an individual who enjoys RPG type game adventures and wants to contribute and affect the creative game development process far more then just acting as a cog in the programming wheel. I realize this isn’t the “norm”. Don’t be afraid, it’s something we call collaborative creative production.

Thank you,

LK

Maybe you can post a gameplay video?

From the screenshots, it looks like a point-and-click adventure…? (no offense!)

If anybody would jump on the wagon, it would be nice for them to know what the actual gameplay is like

Still needs moving to the Volunteer section. This bit of the forum is for paid posts only.

Cas

Technically, yes.

Moan moan moan…
