To help those new to game development, I was thinking of a sections with has tutorials ala gamedev but using java instead of c++ allowing for the beginners to both gain game dev concepts and more knowledge in java.
That’s a good idea.
Do you think they should need to pass some sort of quality assurance threshold or should it just be a free-for-all? My hesitance with simply making a subforum for tutorials is that it would probably get eventually like the Shared Code or Games Showcase sections, which are just incredibly oversaturated so it’s hard to find what’s of quality.
It would probably be better to have some easier way to access tutorials, maybe via category. Probably adding in tags to specific kinds posts would help a lot, allowing people to browse by tag. Sort of like how Games Showcase used to have multiple subforums for each category of game, but on a more streamlined level.
i would imagine that yes, some form of QA would be needed. It would be more beneficial to have the tutorials presented in a more “normal” web site fashion. but since the java gaming website has long gone i guess as a post is the only way.
I think this is a great idea, but that it would be better to make it a wiki. Just for basic stuff like how to make a game loop. There would be sub-heading for the different types - fixed time step, variable time step etc.
We’re planning on turning JGO into a full-fledged site… eventually.
Oh that be nice. I remember an old video that showed JGO as a whole site.
I been wanting to some LWJGL tutorials for java.
Like an updated version of the Nehe tutorials. totally dedicated to Java.
So if others write tutorials for it(LWJGL), I wouldnt mind going over them for quality.
If this idea takes off, you got 1 guy for LWJGL.
One note though, would be cool if the tutorials are kept clean.
Maybe a sticky/link at the top of each Category that links to its relavent tutorial section.
I wouldn’t bother with a formal Q/A system, just move any substandard posts into Shared Code in a similar fashion to the Showcase/WIP sections.
Well, currently GS/WIP is up to the game creator, not me.
Your not planning on moving posts from GS to WIP if they are obviously WIP?
Not at this point, no, mainly because JGO has been barely moderated before (mostly up to the members of the community how it is) so I didn’t want to start imposing arbitrary judgement on things. Also, I don’t want to have to play every single GS game to decide if it should go into WIP.
adding tags order and a “this is usefull” button for quality assurance should be ok, I think
