Java 1.6, Macs and Leopard

There are reports and complaints that Java 1.6 doesn’t work on the new OS X 10.5 (Leopard). So how important do we think this is? I had hoped that Leopard would include a 1.6 VM, but it seems that it’s still in beta. Does this mean we’re going to have to wait for 10.6 before we see Java 1.6 on mac? I’ve certainly seen lots more people playing my games on Mac in the last year or so, it would be a shame if it started to lag too far behind.

(too many similar version numbers make my head hurt ::slight_smile: )

There’s always been a slight delay between JDK releases and OS X releases:

Tiger just saw the release of 1.5 at the same time, so people forget what happened before that.

I do hope that the community will get OpenJDK running on mac

Yeah it is disappointing that Java on the Mac is behind. Hopefully the post linked to by Mojomonkey is correct.

They did change Java 1.5 a bit on Leopard - the Aqua LnF is updated and looks good (I wish NetBeans looked as good), big Java apps are starting a bit faster, the help menu looks like other Leopard apps (you can search for a menu items).

Font rendering also changed to the Sun renderer (which means they must be anticipating a Java 6 release, because Sun’s font renderer got a lot better in Java 6)
