SpongeBob, Matzon,

It was not our intention to spam the list, we have had several people email us and tell us that there was not a lot of Java Game titles out and we should let the list know this book is available. Most of the people mentioning this to us work for a college here in Texas and run another Java forum as well.

We were simply trying to let your list know this book was available and give you a discount on it if you thought it was a good title.

Sorry Matzon

apology accepted - I just get very agitated by spam - getting 10+ in the mail everyday, and then seeing this very spam like posting doesn’t make my day…

I am sure it is a good book though… ;D

Understood Matzon… Our only intent is to help the Java Community, not target you with spam to sell books. Granted we have to sell books to stay in business but the information is what we care about and making sure it is what the community is asking for.

Having said that I would like to talk to you off list to find out how we might be able to promote this Java forum from our site and maybe our books in the future.

did anybody get this book yet? i remember somebody complaining about a java game programming book and how bad it was, but i couldn’t remember if it was this one or that “java 2 game programming” book. if anybody already read this one, any reviews would be greatly appreciated. i didn’t see any reviews at amazon yet. thanks.

I think that you should check C/C++ game programming books if you have some experience with this language because games have been devleloped in this language for so many years so there are many great books on the market.

Even though those books are specific to DirectX, you can learn a lot about game frameworks, collision testing, AI and other things like that.

I know it is C language but you shouldn’t care about that unless you want to learn about Java2D/Java3D but there are many tutorials on 2D and particularly a good one on Java3D on this site and/or the java site.

Maybe Java 1.4 Game Development is a good book but I’m sure you can buy really great and well established C/C++ game programming books.

It’s my opinion.

Find “Tricks of the Game Programming Gurus”, the first, not the second. There has never been a better book written about game programming. It’s crammed full of everything from 2D sprites, to ray tracing algorithms. I just wish they still printed it. Mine’s ready to fall apart. :frowning:

thanks for the replies. yeah i have some books already on C/C++ game programming including tricks of the windows game programming gurus (2nd ed.), programming role-playing games with directx (adams), and multiplayer game programming (barron).

i’m just trying to figure out how to make one of those multiplayer network games. i’m not a real game programmer or anything, so i think i can do without the speed and efficiency of C/C++ right now. it’s just that i also have a solaris and linux box that i want it to be able to run on so i figure that maybe i’ll write the server code in C and the clients in java so that i don’t have to write separate client apps for each OS. so i was just wondering what’s a good book to get to learn java game programming.

You’re far, far, better off writing the server in Java. It’s one of its greatest strengths.

Cas

Have you read this book evaluation?

Another very deceiving book on Java game programming! :frowning:
