Great compo everyone, thanks to all involved!

On to LWJGL16k!

Blah^h, I take it on a mac? Its odd that it crashed on yours, as it seams to work ok on mine (very very old). Any idea why?

If I didn’t get any further (and I know I got no further than about 5 sweconds into that game) then it needed a debugger to get any further. I tried everything else. Just got slower and slwoer and before the cube had finished zooming it was already come to a halt and then just hung forever. Every time. On different macs.

Gah. Yes, with no web access whilst playing initially I spent ages trying to find the shoot key, and even pressed everthing from q to m. I remember later, at the conference, discovering from the website the bizarre key combo (not saying it’s not a good idea, just that I can count on one hand the number of other games that have ever done it), and I thought I went back and replayed it, and rescored.

FWIW I’ll do that anyway this weekend, once I’m off work, so you can have a fair approximation (ditto for Isolation.net if I ever find someone to play with! Maybe grab a family member over Easter…)

PS: I too did think several times that a two-stage judging would be a good idea; stage1 == discover if each game runs, and inform competitors whose games failed that they have X days (maybe 5?) in which to fix it or be automatically disqualified because they can’t be played.

OTOH, when judging this, I bore in mind that making a game work reliably is one of the major challenges of real game design, and that many entrants would have worked hard to get it tested on a wide variety of setups and put extra work into fixing the problems - in which case, it’s kind of unfair to go easy on those that didnt.

As someone contemplating entering the lwjgl16k, this comment makes me afraid, very afraid…

:o

If I might make a suggestion, it might help to know what OS each of the judges was using- I notice I lost a lot of points because one of the judges couldn’t run my game, so I’d like to figure out if it was because it wasn’t a self-executing JAR or if it was an OS incompatibility problem. ^^;

Sorry about the strange key combo, it was a design decision I made and nobody who tested it seemed to complain so I kept it that way

Thanks, I’d appreciate that  I would like to see my final score.

I think it’s reasonable to expect that entries can run on all three major platforms without problems, we do have a forum so users can ask others to test it. I don’t mind though, if the judges have the time to do two rounds then that sounds fine.

A standardised readme to accompany the .jar is definitally a good idea.

Thank you,

Will.

I wrote a draft, but didn’t got many comments.

“2d, fake 3d or 3d” should be “Perspective” methinks.

Well, I think it’s important to clarify the redistribution rights. This way people are allowed to mirror those games. Maybe an optional clause which forbits banners on the mirror page should be added… but that’s about it… I think.

It’ll be used next year me thinks.

Blar*3,

Any news on the lost scores?

Thanks,

Will.

So, do we have closure on the “4k Event” now? Is it complete? Is it over?

Kev

I’m still waiting for my final score  Blar*3 has apparently been very busy which is fair enough.

It would have been nice to have seen a grander finish to the compo, maybe a write-up on the winning entry?

Will.

I’ve re-played it just yesterday, now just need to go through my scoring system and tote it up :).

I’ve got an article in the works on it. Thought I’d wait until the comp had died down a bit, then give it some more publicity ;).

Also…wanted to wait until all the games were archived on JGF so I could link to the full list WITH all webstarted…

Shame there’s no result, I really wanted to add a

“Came 50th in the J4K 2005” to my signature
