J2SE confusion...

(only just noticed this, it’s been a long time since I downloaded java)

We don’t have “just” Java  any more:

“How are Core Java and Desktop Java Technologies Related?
The technologies in Core Java and Desktop Java are interdependent: Core Java provides the basis for security, database connectivity and more. Desktop Java enables you to write rich, highly interactive client software.”

So, now we have Core Java, Desktop Java, and the Java Desktop…all of which are apparently different things?

Core java links to the SDK, Desktop Java only to the JRE, which makes it the same as when they were called “SDK” and “JRE”, but the descriptions of the new names make it look like they’re going to evolve separately ???

…and which genius decided to have two entirely different products whose name only differed in the ordering of the words? Confusion will certainly abound (and it’ll make google searches really really annoying…)

True.

Just checked the page… it’s really a bit confusing.

Oh and this one:

How did they managed it to put jpg artefacts into a gif? Is everyone using tft displays there? I can’t believe that no one noticed that.

Jpeg’s for pictures containing a lot of text/fonts are ugly indeed. :frowning: Some guys still didn’t get this point at all!

Another example: load a Java Webstart and look at the bad artefacts around the Application’s name which is being rendered to an image by Webstart and then converted to a Jpeg and this one is being displayed. :frowning: Looks ugly again.

First off. let me say you are lucky the product names differ at all. For reference I give you JWS which has been all of the below:

Java Workshop
Java Web Server
Java Webstart

(And yes this is another heartburn maker for me. I’m well aware of how well we name we things :frowning: )

For clarity:

Java Desktop is Sun Linux. Why is it called “Java Desktop” you ask? Answer, because marketing did a survey and found out that more people recognize the Java brand the the Sun one. In market-droid binary thus naming the Sun flavor of Linux “Java Desktop” makes perfect sense.

These other two are new ones on me. I am going to HOPE that they presage what we have all asked for, which is a base VM that just includes system level stuff like lang, net and nio. DOn’t run off and say “Jed said that…” this is only a hope not a known fact. If I can find out more I’ll let you know.
