Is this a good Java book?

Java, how to program, 6th edition.
It’s required for my CS&M course.

Can anyone judge if I will learn anything from this book? I believe my knowledge of Java surpasses that of this book.

Looks like it is thick and filled with fluff… I gather you can skip the book for your course.

Is it the Dietel one? I used that when I was first learning java ( not that exact one- it was perhaps the second edition “now featuring Java 1.2 and Swing!” ) and it was fine.

Doesn’t necessarily explain some of the stuff you might want to know and I learned a lot more from Dick Baldwin’s online tutorials but OK as a beginners book.

If your course is based on it you will probably need it because your lecturers will set homework based on it rather than for what it will teach you…

It isn’t very helpful. I’ve read it.
It looks like it’s aimed at beginners.

There is an advanced one that is supposed to cover a whole lot more but basically just shows a couple of larger apps and describes how they work. That one really is useless.
