Is GPU the new math coprocessor?

I have read some time ago that AMD bought ATI.

Now, seeing the offerings Intel has in IGPs and hearing AMD intends to bundle the GPU somehow, I think the days of geeky “get yourself a decent board” will be over, at least for the vast majority of PC owners.

Yup.

I imagine the future tiny GPU modules will be just as fast as todays high-end-GPUs.
With the direct access to the CPU-RAM we can process vector data really fast, without sending it over the usual hops.

It will, however, be very difficult to make the VM take advantage of this, as even SSE isn’t exploited to the max by the VM.

I think we’ll need some new kind of native bindings sooner or later.
