Irrlicht ported to Java

Irrlicht for Java. Now this is definitely nice.

Let’s see how many scenegraph engines are out there for Java.
Irrlicht, Java3D, Xith3D, jME, and that’s all I have, but I do remember at least 2 extra which I don’t have a name for. One engine I can’t remember is pretty advanced and it’s commercial.

Java is definitely coming out of the dark ages in the gaming arena.

Thats great news. Irrlicht is damn fast. And if im not mistaken this is an high-level binding not just a direct mapping to opengl. Which may have certain speed advantages but on the other side will bring typical C++ memory management problems.

Hasn’t the JIrr project been around for a while but not actually usable yet? Couldn’t find any demos of it working?

Kev

Checked it. It still looks like its a early alpha. I supose this was a bit premature celebration. ;D

You forgot the java-ogre thingy that was around awhile ago.

I believe you mean AgentFX.

Well all the tools are there (and has been for a while). 2-3 years ago, the previous version of AgentFX was running Quake III levels at the same frame rate as the Q3-eninge. This was before JOGL, LWJGL and other fancy bindings

I must say though that the “real” game market is one of the most conservative segments to reach. We’re still loosing potential clientes on the gaming market, mainly because of Java’s bad reputation, even if we can show Megacorps Online which is a cool tech-demo (in Java).
