Inquiry: JGO on android / iphone browsers

For about a year I’ve been browsing JGO on my Android phone. I’ve been unimpressed to say the least. Maybe it’s the relatrively low resolution of the screen, combined with the default zoom*, but I find that I have to zoom in and scroll left-to-right to read a thread properly.

I’d like to hear from you about your (user)experience with JGO on your phone. Is it OK, does it need work, is it so appalling that you decide to barely visit JGO on your mobile device? If anything else than OK, what is the native resolution of your screen?

To write a read-only version dedicated to mobile browsing. is certainly doable, but first I need to know whether there is reasonable demand for such an effort.

* My Samsung GT-S5660 has 320x480px, while the browser renders at 533x800px at a zoom of 60%, resulting into tiny text and terrible font kerning

I read on my phone often. Text tends to wrap fine and be perfectly readable - I’ve come across worse! That’s with a Nexus S running Gingerbread originally, and now ICS.

Replying to threads on the other hand is a nightmare. It’s almost impossible to place the cursor where you want in the textfield. You click somewhere and it immediately buggers off somewhere else.

The SMF textarea is riddled with javascripts that fire events, wreaking havoc on some browsers (like MSIE).

I see that your mobile has a resolution of 800x480px, which probably means your browser is not zooming, meaning it’s actually usable.

I have the huuuge Samsung Infuse 4G using Maxthon browser. JGO looks and works fine for me but I wish there could be a more friendly interface

I was actually thinking of writing an Android app for JGO but a browser interface for mobile would be better

I have an old Nokia n95 (not even the 8gb version :frowning: ). I use Opera Mobile and it fits the websites so no horizontal scroll is needed to read most stuffs, like forums or blogs. It’s really great and easy to use. Also, as it ain’t touch, moving with the cursor is really easy, I also added the Quick Reply in the profile config of this forum so I can, guess what, Quick Reply! :stuck_out_tongue:

I used to frequently browse JGO from my Android phone and tablet without any problems, that until the ´bloody annoying´ game ads were introduced in the right hand side column. Now have to zoom in just to be able to read the text. As a result I don´t tend to visit this forum anymore. They used to disappear when you log in, what happened? Can you not just remove them in the css for mobile devices?

The sidebar is only shown on the homepage, the ‘showcase’ and the ‘featured’ boards. I don’t see how that, by itself, would have caused ‘zooming in to read text’ in a regular topic, but maybe you were talking about the boards.

I removed the sidebar, if the user-agent contains ‘Android’, ‘iPhone’ or ‘iPod’ (not iPad).

Everything looks great on the Galaxy Nexus. One of the benefits of having a gigantic phone.

Yeah. I was talking about the boards mainly (i.e. the home page, topics are fine as you say!).
Just tried on my mobile and loads better now thanks.
I still see the showcase on my Android tablet though. A quick google suggests the UserAgent may be “Mobile Safari” for tablets, or similar. I can confirm tomorrow by checking my google analytics account. Although saying that, not a big deal as text is ok on tablet (I just find the showcase annoying).

It’s not bad on my HTC Legend using Dolphin Browser :), however it has a tiny screen so scrolling through posts is not the best. I have also noticed that when reading posts the text of the post scales nicely to the size of the screen, but any code tags (and i think there are others) don’t which is a pain sometimes.
