I'm new and I do not know how to start...

hello

I’ll try to speak in English , sorry that I do not speak well … :-[
I’m learning Java at University and i’d like to make a game with it : a Pong game.
I’m well coding in C++ ( with openGL , SDL , Fmod , … ) but i dont know how to get in Java , how to start :frowning:

I think about my classes :
entity
ball extends entity
wall extends entity
pad extends entity

i don’t know if i need a texture manager or some thing like that because i do not know how to make the rendering stuff …
maybe a sound manager …
I do not know about rendering , sound management , and others in Java :frowning:

help me please
thanks

I’d recommend to do the following:

  1. Download eclipse, extract and run. (www.eclipse.org)
  2. Once in eclipse, make a simple hello world application, right click on the java file you made and do Run as java application.
  3. Go read about java-invaders ( space invaders ) : http://www.planetalia.com/cursos/
  4. Spend tons of time learning.

If you’re seeking for help on learning java, then I’d google for java tutorials.

Another good set of tuturials is at CokeAndCode

There is 1 there that covers normal Java accelerated rendering (2D), and there is also one that covers LWJGL which is an OpenGL wrapper (and some extras). If you know openGL already, then you can bring all your experience with you to LWJGL.

I went through those tutorials at cokeandcoke.com when I was a total newbie, and they confused me like hell. The only thing that got >me< going was that tutorial I pointed to.

Everyone has a best way or learning. Checkout both sets and chose the one that works best.

I’ve never used either, so I can’t comment first hand on either.

wery nice links tkanks very much

If you want to develop games for j2me (mobile devices) then you are best to use www.netbeans.org with mobility pack.

Even if you want to do j2se games you should see if NetBeans 5.0 is not the best IDE for you, it is a very important step (getting the right tools).

If you know java language then you will be able to easily find your opengl skills a plus wend using LWJGL, if you don’t know java read a primer on it, you will find some similarities between it and C++, but also many and important differences. I like books so i recommend you read:

one of the many beginning java books they are so many i will not even list them and one of these 2 books
