I'm back!

I don’t know if many noticed, but the past 2-3 weeks I’ve been mostly off of JGO. Reddit and school (mostly Reddit) have fully engulfed my life!

I had over 130 unread threads and I never thought I’d see this day again:

Anyway: I’ve lost all motivation to program and do anything other than waste time on the internet. I haven’t opened Eclipse since September 8…

HELP?!?!? T________T

EDIT: before anyone mentions: a hiatus from computer usage is not possible…

Block Reddit. Close all windows except for Eclipse.

I think I may have stole your motivation to program  Because yesterday all I wanted to do was program my game after I discovered IndieDB

Suggestions:

Turn off your router or modem (would be hell for me)
Open eclipse

yeah that’s pretty much it

I don’t miss you at all 8)

FYI 20 minutes ago before this post I registered for reddit.

If you can’t make any game right now, try to play lot of games! May one of them will turn you “on”.

Zone into some motivating music and finish one task at a time. Looking at the amount of work to complete an entire game can be daunting but that one animation isn’t so bad ;D.

By the way, the amount of questions asked by me on the the forum that you’ve answer has been very helpful, thanks.

NEVER! :frowning:

IndieDB? Whoa I’ve never heard of this, it looks cool!

And I wish I could turn off the router, but I’m not the only one in the house (still living with parents :persecutioncomplex:)

Motivating music is one of the very few things that actually work on me. I completely forgot about that!

You’re very welcome! I love helping others ;D

Hey bro!

Totally know what you mean about motivation. I was working on a game which was going nicely. I’ve always wanted to have deferred rendering for the lighting solution. I’ve got all the multi-render-target stuff working but I’m stuck on the lighting phase. I’m right out at the edge of my GL knowledge here and the inability to debug the shader phase is super frustrating.

I get stuck reading Reddit and playing Battlefield 3 to avoid the frustration of not moving the code on… which of course means I don’t move the code on which makes me MORE frustrated! Arrrgh!

I’m trying to get back into it tonight. No Reddit/BF3 for me tonight!

Yeah its the same with me. If I get frustrated or bored with something I’m working on, I just go to Reddit and BF3

That’s why you should put your gaming desire to non-AAA games.

never ever in my life been on reddit.

Good for you, I regret my decision.

lol… it definitely isn’t a problem if you get tired of programming for a while.

Your brain just needs some time to think about the frustrations and come up with solutions for them. If you’ve been trying at the same problem for weeks, even your body knows when “bashing a rock against a toaster 2 million more times isn’t going to fix it.”

Seriously, I find it strange when people can continuously program without taking a break from it. Give yourself some time to unwind, and let yourself naturally go back to programming. Trying to force yourself to do it (unless it is a job…) is not going to give you anything more productive. Instead, it’ll just get you to hate programming even more when you still can’t solve that same problem.

Take an extended break. If you like listening to music, do that. Just stay away from coding until your brain believes its ready. That’s my advice.

The general consensus seems to be…

  1. Take breaks sometimes.
  2. Never go to Reddit.
  3. Don’t play BF3 too much (or other AAA games)
  4. Music works.

We should add this to the wiki… ;D
