some interesting and good news after all the doom and gloom we’ve had for Java.
That’s interesting news indeed
The blog mentions they’re working alongside Oracle with this. Maybe I’m wrong, but I thought Oracle was abandoning OpenJDK though?
Oracle never mentioned or hinted that they were going to kill OpenJDK and alway maintained that they would keep it open. However, many did fear it might happen after they cold heartedly killed OpenSolaris and the dead lock that was at the JCP.
However this changes everything, Oracle now have a strong ally at the JCP and java is now likely to remain open.
Besides not sure you can un-GPL something
Fantastic then!
That will certainly help with damage control with Oracle’s shattered image regarding java and openness and such.
Not at all. This is just a agreement to not anilathe platform with WMD’s , err, patents.
Boy are those things stupid. I wonder how will they feel once all development starts going to asia and europe. I guess the corporations will just jump ship off the sinking america.
also there is an interesting blog post here http://blogs.oracle.com/henrik/2010/10/ibm_joins_openjdk_supports_java_se_7_and_8_proposal.html
[quote]We will continue to work with IBM and others to enhance and improve the JCP. This organization has been hugely successful in pulling together a wide range of organizations and individuals, but it is 15 years old and there is always room for improvement. There were some really good discussions on this within the JCP last week, but you’ll have to wait a little bit longer for a more detailed update on that topic

Looks like there might be more good news coming soon.
Its hard to see how this will kill java but a lot of people are complaining.
http://journal.paul.querna.org/
Yes, but he says he prefers even PHP to the Java language so I think his opinions are automatically suspect.
There are a lot of purists that whine and whine.
They are complaining about Java being a platform, and Java applications being dependent on that platform. If Oracle kills the (heavily invested in) Java platform, you’re locked into Oracle.
Oh wait. We can fork JDK7… or keep using Java 6. It’s not like it’s bad.
Yeah, that article was utter FUD. (1) Java has too many investors (enterprise, banks etc) to just go away and (2) The JDK can be forked as it is right now.
I think a lot of the doom and gloom around Java right now is just wishful thinking by people who are antagonistic towards the language in the first place.
