IBM to buy Sun for $7 Billion?

Yeah, Sun as private company would make a lot more sense, being public looks like a lot of trouble to a technological company who actually care about their stuff.

I know this is off topic, but…

Well - yes. Maybe it was just my little niche in enterprise backend development, but it was no big deal to switch back and forth between .Net and J2EE. All technologies were nearly the same. Not to talk about approaches to common problems.

Well I was cutting corners a bit with that statement - hmm I still rather not open that can of worms.
I’ll stick to this question: where will you deploy your stuff

Also afaik the net solutions where still a bit behind compaired to there java variants.

I was reffering to development, not deployment. Frankly I don’t want to bother where I deploy the java stuff either. But you are right, let’s just keep this topic closed

how can it scare you?

have you not done tons of google searches? think abut how hard it would be without google.

Probably I would still use altavista… The problem is not the google search alone, but all the other applications they create and their desire to combine those to derive other “useful” informations. They create a data privacy nightmare, but most people doesn’t complain, because google is hip and fancy. Hey they even ask picasa users to link full names and email-adresses to people on pictures… and they can identify those people on other pictures. Hmm, combine this with google street view and you can identify which people(or you) have been in a specific street at the time, the photo was taken. And if you use google desktop search, they might know the contents of your harddisk. And if you have a google account, they might now for what (porn, drugs, whatever) you are searching. If you use chrome, they might be able to track, to which financial (or other) service sites you have access to…

And think about agencies or criminals getting backdoor access to these data etc. etc.

For starters, some1 shouldnt put personal info.

second, google isnt like “hey I bet alkhida could use some nice info, lets make these apps”.

they really are just trying to make things easier.

besides then facebook is a nightmare as well.

Oh, everybody does… Blogs, forum profiles, social networking sites etc.

Yep. “The opposite of ‘good’ is ‘by good intentions’”.

I consider any social networking app to be a privacy nightmare. That’s the reason, I don’t use them - at least I don’t post photographs in them.

They don’t store personal data, or any data that would identify you. I know there was a big thing about this in chrome.
Most of there products do some feedback on usage and stat’s but this its optional, just like another other products like from Microsoft.

wait you honestly dont use google?

u would rather use altaVista?

No I use google. I used altavista (or metacrawler) before google existed (yeah, I am this old ;)).

hum… how can they scare ?? by controlling all the internet traffics, google have gained a huge/the biggest power over information
have you not done tons of google searches? think abut how hard it would be without google.
it wont be that hard and a lot more free… google just reduce what you can see throught your little internet windows to what they think are good.

I am not saying, that they do evil things, but they could, just because they own the data aggregation (and identification) capabilities from end to end. Also they often have the clause in their eula, that allows them to change their security and data privacy philosophy (including how much and what data are transfered to their servers) with the user implicitely agreeing to that change (without even knowing it).

They track all your searches and associate them with your IP.
“Good intentions” of course since they’re trying to make your search results more relevant. I’m not saying Google are doing anything evil at the moment, but power always corrupts and the power they have over information is unprecedented. Not only do they collect an insane amount of information, but they are also the biggest source of new information to most people.

You can use Privoxy to avoid google analytics and TrackMeNot (FF plugin) to make random searches.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AOL_search_data_scandal shows what somebody could do with search data.

ok, if I understand you correctly… you dont like it because it is the best?

taht jsut makes no sense.

you guys dont like it because 2 guys though “hey search sux right now, lets make it better” and they did it really well.

besides they would get crushed if they decided to do “bad” things.

think about how the whole gmail with ads thing.

You don’t get it at all, do you? Go out and read 1984.

Good call. :stuck_out_tongue:

Or just research Nazi Germany.

the year?

what does WW2(or two, cant remember which was then) have toi do with this?

I love how this thread has devolved from “IBM might buy Sun” to “Google is Big Brother”
