IBM Cell = hardware Java virtual machine?!

Lifting the lid on IBM’s Cell chip

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/01/13/ibm_cell_chip/

From article:
“A patent issued to IBM, Sony and Toshiba for the Cell microprocessor earned a brief mention on ZDnet last week, and so Faultline thought it was worth trying to extract what it could from the detailed technical descriptions. IBM will shortly be explaining more detail at the US Solid State Circuits Conference in February. We have always thought that the Cell design was really a group of processors rather than one single design and this patent more than confirms that, describing it as a hardware version of the Java virtual machine.”

Me likey!!!

Isn’t this Cell technology going to be used in the Playstation 3? Does this mean that the Playstation 3 may be able to somehow…hopefully…run Java!!!

We’ll have to wait and see.

Andy.

Nothing is ever so easy - if time and working in technology has ever taught me a thing, it is this. There’s always a few gotchas

I looked through some stuff about this, and as far as I can tell it is not a hardware JVM. It just has similar principles. :frowning:

With some luck it could mean that there will be cross compilers and tools.
