how about... doing something against all that spam?

It really isnt funny anymore. This forum gets way more spam than any other forum I know… and it isnt all that big in comparison.

If you dont use email verification, you get like a lot more spam.

If you dont add those advertised urls to the badword list, they will come back and successfully spam again. (Told you so… and surprise surprise… it happend.)

If you dont delete those accs/posts, then it was totally worth to spam this page. Good for em… bad for us.

yep +1, spam is boring

Well, I’d like to point out that although they spam all over, the topics which have active moderators tend to be fine (because we delete them as soon as they appear), and the problem is with the topics with mods who don’t have time to do the moderation. Just assigning more mods would solve that, wihtout having to add any features, code, test, or anything.

moderators vary (they can go on vacation or whatever). the features oNyx mentions, however, always provide enough obstacles to block most spam

But we’ve been asking for them for years (multiple) and they do require time and effort from the people who have least to spare. Obviously, I’d prefer better solutions, but you know a quick solution that is good enough is better than a perfect solution that you never get around to implementing

Yea, there is of course some initial commitment, but in the long run it means way less work. Just enabling email verification would reduce the amount of spam by a factor of 10-20 (seriously).

And using the badword list like this keeps those manual ref id spammers away… or to be more precise. They’ll see thats futile and will stop after their first post, which means that there will be less to delete.

Trust me on this. I know what I’m talking about.

All right, I’m a little nervous my account is going to be deleted because I mentioned a certain free web hosting service once in a post and some people thought it was spam.

If you’re really worried, just edit that message and remove the name. But you shouldn’t really be worried, moderators won’t ban you for that

I don’t think thats the only issue bert has, I think it’s more a general problem, meaning if we’re going to have a better spam system, we should be careful, so it doesn’t filter actual users as spam.

So a better registration filter, thats easy for humans (or java game developers), but nearly impossible for bots, would be a good start.

We dont really need overly fancy automatic systems. Simply using email verification would do the trick for now (afaict). Just that and maybe 3 “super mods” (admins) for some administrative overlap.

@bert

Dont worry about it. It only looked a bit like guerillia marketing (an odd thing to do for a bot) and cross checking your other posts clearly shows that you’re not here for spamming.

Ignoring this issue doesnt help.

._.

I second that.

I’m getting spam via the personal messages now (obviously not something extra moderators is going to help with). >:( If the board doesn’t currently require email validation then that really should be switched on…
