Host your JGO projects under Project Kenai

JGO!

Wanted to point you all to the http://kenai.com/ site and see how we can start getting our (your) projects hosted on the site. Doing this will help all of us here to better aggregate the output from the community.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

From what I remember from the community project we attempted is that you need an invite to be able to actually start a project.

Did you try during the beta phase?

Hmm, should I put my projects on there, or keep them exclusive to turquoisegrotto?

BTW, the upcoming Netbeans 6.7 has built-in support for Kenai: http://www.netbeans.org/community/releases/67/index.html .

would be cool for closed source ;), thats pretty neat of having netbeans integrate it.

I though it was during the beta, that being said I could have missed the button “Request Project Creation”.
That was what you where hinting at, right?

Other then the problems of setting it up (which are probably fixed now) kenai boosted the most(usefull) features and one of the cleanest interfaces. Though most of these sites seem to have some hidden gems.

Hi,

It looks cool. I was just curious about it.

  1. Does it allow closed source?

  2. What advantages over goggle.code or sourceforge or the other code repositories?

Doesn’t seem so.

If you dig around enough (Chris, feel free to mention to the webmaster that it’s too hard to find this out) you find that they allow and OSI-approved licence. From the absence of mention of any other licence I presume that closed source is impermissible. Why would you want to host a closed source project on a public site anyway?

Excellent data back up. Easy access. Google docs for example is great for storing things. Th

Please tell me why you want to better aggregate the output from the community. Do you have a precise aim?

But Google Docs isn’t public, is it? I haven’t used it but I rather assumed that you had to be logged in to get access to your documents.

The impression I get is that the precise aim is to generate lots of activity on Kenai so that Oracle don’t shut it down to cut costs. Feel free to call me a cynic.

ChrisM: it seems like a nice service and offer. i would use it maybe if i was working with a small team or more publicly.
i also don’t see how this could aggregate the work from jgo members more than jgo itself. maybe through the project tags? like using a “jgo” tag? otherwise, everything up for show or in need of help is in the showcase section anyways, right?

pjt33: you don’t really think that this was just for activity, right? ChrisM is jgo member for so long … i think he’s beyond simply making advertising here.

Yes, jgo tags would be great. Also, we, as a community, would not have to try to pull examples/projects together from a variety of different repositories across the web.

As the founder of JGO? Yes, I have been here a long time

Ok, you are a cynic ;D As you, me or anyone else out here has no idea what Oracle might do, by all means, don’t let that get in the way of speculation ::slight_smile:

There is a chance Oracle will sell all their own products and services to Sun, before the takeover. Then Sun is worth much more than what they paid. I bet this will please the shareholders.

:persecutioncomplex:

Anyway, ontopic…

I think the Kenai site has a ‘troubled’ colour scheme. The gray gradients and blue gradients don’t really match that well. The site looks like a mockup, which might be due to the beta phase, but I really hope some pretty darn good artist will make it look more professional in the long run. I bet you wanted to get functionality right first, but unfortunately I cannot comment on that yet, as I have no account.
