Newbie & Debugging Questions

Hey JavaGaming Developers , Newbies and other members. I am new to this forum , and also at Java. Currently learning it. So I wanted ask something

  1. What is the best Java complier for Ubuntu ( currently using Eclipse )
  2. Is it hard to make a wow like game? ( not completly with skills, maps etc. I mean only the 3person and some basic movement like jumps and other things. basic as possible with no models. )
  3. Is it hard to make the previous mentioned game ONLINE ( MMORPG )

I’m sorry if these answers are discouraging, and please understand that I mean no disrespect. It’s an inescapable fact that MMORPGs are extraordinarily complex, about as complex as game software gets. Starting programming with that as an immediate goal will only lead to disappointment.
Start small (pong, breakout, pacman, tetris, asteroids, etc) , and attempt more complex projects as you learn. Actually finishing a small project will teach you much more than attempting and abandoning something more ambitious.

  1. I use Eclipse as well but as I didn’t ever try something else I’m quite biased when I tell you that it’s the best one I know :wink:
  2. If you want it to look good, then yes. My first 3D project was a first person game where you could run around in some rooms and jump. Anything more than that gets very complicated (and that was already really complicated as I’d only done some small games in VB6 before).
  3. Oh yes, manage your expectations on your first few projects. It’s quite difficult to create a game, and if you add network elements into it you start coming into quite difficult land.

Just like ryanm I’m not trying to discourage you but merely manage your expectation. We have all been where you are now and, personally, after a few years of practice (1.5 thousand hours or so over the past 3 years) I am now confident to start looking into a MMO.

Just like ryanm said, if you are new to Java (and new to programming/game making?) start with something really easy and once you have a couple of finished small games look into something more difficult when you know more about what you’re getting yourself into.

thanks for the greetings. i am not discouraged because I’ve got other buddies in my team.
another concept of my idea. i don’t want to make it like WoW (same models ) just i want to make controls WASD and space for a cube to do them. simple as possible. i want a cube to go forward,backward,left or right and jump. i don’t wish the textures. Anyway im starting with Java basics from Monday and hopefully will learn it for 1 month.
P.S im 14. haven’t enter highschool ( computer science ). when I do , ill be more active with my game coding.

EDIT: im not new to programing/game making , since i’ve tried Game Maker :). Started learning programming from the start of this school year , first in VB.net than my school change it to smallbasic.com. my frist program was a web browser made in VB.net when i was 12.

I wouldn’t worry about it, your english is better than most native-english 14-year olds.
