hello hello everyone

I was only able to post here once before my computer died, I’ve got a new one and I’m ready to pick up Java again. I’ve decided against starting off with a text adventure because I can’t write well enough to make it interesting and nobody would play it anyway (not even me). I have a few ideas about other text mode games I can do just to get into the swing of things before I move on to graphical programming.

From what I can tell, Java doesn’t have any commands to control the cursor position or color for plain old text mode, am I correct or did something slip by me? I’m fairly certain I could do it with a combo of swing and awt but I think that’s pushing it a little far for a couple simple text mode games. Does anyone have any ideas on other ways I could do this? I want to stay away from third party librarys for now until I get the basics of the language down.

i dont know if u can change the text color, i think u can sortof mess with cursor position. you would think u would beable to do that…

but you know, its not really that hard to do graphical programming. you’ll probably have more fun with it, and learn more about the language with the project than doing a text game.

what do u know about java so far anyway?

I pretty much just know the basics. I have a book that I bought and I’ve gone through the tutorial a little bit. After doing some more reading, I think your right that I should just jump into java2d. I’m not entirely knew to programming, I did a ton of QBasic way back in the day and I’ve done a fair ammount in C. The biggest hurdle is trying to figure out OOP :).

cool,

oop is pretty easy… its like, you have a class of methods, variables and all that, and then u can just initialize them as u need. its like an extended idea of structs in C.

since u arent new to programming and u know C and qbasic, you’ll likely have an easy time picking of java, and oop in no time.

good luck (break a leg hehe)

That is the most irritating avatar I’ve seen in a long time… :frowning:

If You want to work on a team as opposed to going it alone check out the JRPG Project here. Everyone is welcome to join.

@javatypo

I’m starting to figure out oop slowly but surely. It’s just hard switching from a procedural mind set I guess … or I’m just an idiot :).

@20thCenturyBoy

Is the avatar really annoying or do you just not like the movie it’s from? If it really is annoying I’ll change it to something else.

@krypto

I’ve read about that a lot over the past couple days and it does look really interesting. I had thought about joining up but I really doubt I could contribute anything, especially code wise right now. If you can think of something that I could do to help though let me know and I’ll send you my contact info.

I like the avatar ;D Love the movie

I’m so out of the loop! What movie is it?

Tom, did you write squareheads? If so, terrific work, keep it up!

I guess I have to check it out then :slight_smile: Love Beavis and Butthead, so I’ll probably like it.

Yes I did, and thanks!
