hello friends!

hi im new to this forum and new to java game programming, but not new to java. im reading killer game programming with java, and its a great book.

my question is, what is arianne(well i know its an engine), and how do engines like these work?

my main goal is to make a mmorpg(with some premade coding), but thats in the FAR FAR FAR distance, i know im going to take baby steps to get there, so u dun need to lecture me about that

Well, welcome to the forums, Toby! I can’t answer your question, ā€œwhat is arianne?ā€ But I just wanted to welcome you and say that I’m glad to see a new game programmer admit he must take baby steps, and not just say, ā€œHi, I’m so and so… I’ve never programmed before… I wan’t to make an MMORPG!ā€

Hope you stick around and good luck!

Yea, too many that know nothing about game programming come in here and say ā€œI want to create MMORPGXXSUPERDUBERā€ and expect it to take a few days to learn it all.

Try a few years. And after you’ve learned all you needed to create a game like that, add another few years just to create the game.

There is a reason there are hundreds of people, professional game makers, that work on modern game titles.

Engines are nothing more than framework/libraries that help you create your game. No two engines are the same, but they use fundamentally the same concepts and technologies.

But I would stay away from engines for now, since you will have to LEARN what makes an engine. Try going through code and coke’s (kevglass’s) spaceinvaders tutorial (google it). Start with 2D game programming, when you’ve been able to create a SMALL game, like pong, or breakout, you can start to study 3D graphics. After that… the infinite universe of game programming.

I second that. Take a look at any major game like an RPG, the end credits… Notice how many programmers, graphics designers, sound artists, prop designers, level designers, etc there are. It’s exactly like the end credits of a movie, although, I have noticed there’s more people who’ve worked on a game than any credits of a movie I’ve ever seen.
