Hello Community (Introducing Myself)

I can’t believe I just now found this place - this might be my new haunt.

I’ve been a Java developer/zealot since the beginning of Java. I was at the first Java Gaming Summit (along with JavaONE, 2003). I’ve made Java (and games) my career focus.

I’ve had the ambition to create an MMORPG (since before RPGs were MMO). Now I’m the sole developer of Island Forge (and single member of Potential Games LLC), and we’ve just gone into open beta… but more about that in the proper forum.

So, greetings to the community. I’m eager to contribute and learn!

Welcome - and strange you didn’t hear about JGO a long time ago! Your RPG looks like it’s coming along nicely.

Cas

yeah JGO is not known enough for some strange reason
I read about it in a book - maybe killer game programming

Thanks, princec - I have a strong background in software development, but this is my first fully-featured game project. Feedback is most welcome. (Island Forge is fully playable, and we’re looking to get more players for beta … I’ll write more in the Showcase forum.)

Welcome to JGO! Let me hijack this thread to explain why our forum is so poorly represented in the search engines. Only since two years JGO is actually indexed by google, as the crawler IPs were banned in SMF, just like somebody banned… the entire country of Poland. Since then, google gave priority to the print version of each page (looking at the bloated html smf generates, you can’t really blame google). Hence the forum part of the site was mostly hidden for anybody that visited us. Then google started to give member-profiles high prio (many internal links) resulting in the majority of casual visitors looking at pages without informative content. Since the friendly URLs were added, we finally see visitors that have proper landingpages, resulting in longer visits. In about 5 years we might pop up in more generic java/gaming search queries… until then, enjoy the small community

Same here. The book told me to go here ::slight_smile:

@riven
sometimes small can be better 8)

I found the site with google and that was ~5~6 years ago, when I started learning about java 2D and was looking for answers. So one could find it, if one looks carefully enough :stuck_out_tongue:

Welcome.

I discovered this forum when I was looking for examples of 3D games in Java. I found Bloodridge and his creator was here. Then, I began talking about mine (in February 2007).

Welcome to JGO Nyhm!

I found this website when looking for sample source code in Computer Science class at school. ;D

haha, IF ound this site when I started making games in java and I came across one of markus’s games. I have no idea where I would be without this forum :stuck_out_tongue:

FYI: I’ve posted about Island Forge in the Showcase forum:

I’m looking forward to the JGO community checking it out.

Hey, fella.

Cool game.

Thanks a lot! I really think the folks here at JGO will like Island Forge. It’s designed and implemented by a Java developer, and focuses on creativity and building, which is much akin to programming.

Have a look at the story/quest builder. You author dialogue (character text) and tasks (story goals). Those nodes are linked by logic decisions based on whether tasks have been started, finished, or are not yet set. The story engine is an interactive decision tree. It’s easy enough to use by non-programmers, but software developers will have a strong insight into all that can be done with sequence and selection operations.

Give it a try and let me know what you think!

I googled for java game development forum.

Welcome to JGO Nyhm  Your game looks pretty good, I haven’t given it a try yet though.

On the communities small size and obscurity: I kind of like it, probably because everybody here is cool not to mention helpful.

Welcome to this nice little place of helpfull resources.

Thanks for the welcome, folks. I’ve already been looking into Java 2D performance topics, and I also plan to ask about application deployment (I’m using JWS, but I don’t find it to be very good for end users). Hopefully I can lend a hand in my areas of expertise.

Welcome. This is a great site for learning Java gaming. I’ve found it extremely useful.

I think my way was strange :D. I googled why my PSU cooler was so laud. And running through pages and links in one page I found link to this site.
