GTG Update - March 19  -  The road to GDC!

Hey all!

Update coming a day late due to the work we are doing for GDC. Everything has finally come together and we do final staging monday and tuesday. Getting to the show was a tremendous effort and I appreciate everyone who assisted us (internal and external).

Thought you would like a picture of what a CGO has to do to get ready:

Before:

After:

After getting the parts to build our demo systems (2 weeks late) I was able to get 8 systems built in one night. There is nothing like having a powersupply flame out at 3:30 in the morning. Very cool smell and serves as a wake up call

Systems delivered to CA and we have them up in the lab.

Jeff has our server demonstration pretty much completed and, believe me, it will rock the show.

Now, on to the “pre-show” tidbit. Due to press embargos, I can’t reveal details yet, but I can tell you this.

Sun will be launching a Java technology game DEVELOPMENT competition that will kick off next week! This community has asked for us to sponsor a competition like this for quite some time and we wanted to wait until we could do it properly. Prizes for the competition are being provided by our competition sponsors (names to be revealed next week) and we think you will be happy

A few more things. We will be keeping a daily blog of the show and posting pictures from the show floor. We will also update news reports throughout the show.

Thanks again to this community for helping to make Java technology for game development a reality. We appreciate all that you do!

-The GTG

Are those systems sitting on an air hockey table?? That’s funny because at work I sit beside an air hockey table. When we want a break from playing Q3 at lunch we have a game of air hockey… then it’s back to the programming…

When will details about the competition be published?

great idea BTW ;D

Will.

GDC opens approx. NOW!

We’ll see what happens now…

Thousands of new members here?

Well, acutally…

The GDC Expo starts on wed  Thats when people can see what we are announcing.

I found this press release:

http://biz.yahoo.com/rc/040322/tech_sun_games_1.html
The contest is designed to showcase Java game development and includes prizes like a $40,000 development kit, computers and personal digital assistants.
Hopefully the prizes are good. I liked the Z3 for the Nextel Contest in 2000 and the $20K last year for the Moto J2ME contest.

Enjoy,
Wood

[wonders if we’ll be given enough time to give most of us a decent chance; e.g. lots of people need advance warning of when the competition starts in order to schedule their free time, unless it’s got a finish date that’s far in the future]
Sun said the winners would be announced during the JavaOne conference in San Francisco this summer.
From that I think we can deduce the timeline is a few (3?) months.

Sure wish I knew a couple of artists…

The IGF contest @ GDC takes something like 5 months to judge (incidentally which is far too long IMHO! Although you can kind of see why). So I’d guess unless there are very few entrants it’s going to take at least a couple of weeks to judge?

I wish I could have attended, stuck here starting a startup

The final approval of the name and incorporation from the state comes on Friday!

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Go Sun and Java!

I can’t wait for the day where you can use a PC running any major OS to play against people using consoles and vice versa ;D

Will.

It’s only Tuesday, but JDJ says that $40K is up for graps

http://sys-con.com/story/?storyid=44174&DE=1
it must be developed on 100% Java
technology standard APIs.
So does this include lwjgl?

Somebody start a contest thread!

I hope JOGL and LWJGL are allowable native API’s! Likewise, other open source java API’s such as JOAL, JInput and Odejava should be in there too IMHO. It’s a bit hard to expect a 100% pure java game until some of these api’s make there way into an official java API.

Will.

Shocked

Do not forget all the people that want to use jogl infrastructure for industrial purpose like us. The development of jogl should not only focus on games but visualization in general…

see some screesshots of our viewer to be ported from J3D… to jogl

It’s better to link pictures of this size.

I agree, even though I’m a broadband user running a high screen resolution.
