Great Idea - Logo

Could one of the more arty types amongst the throng create a “Powered By Xith” or “Built on Xith” logo?

I normally like to have a list of logos for technologies used on a project and since there seems to be no looking back now I’m using Xith in earnest I’d really like one…

I’d have a go myself by I have two left hands (so to speak).

Kev

Yep, could be cool to have a logo for Xith…
I’ve spent half the day thinking about it and I finally found out that I didn’t know why “Xith” (I found out why “3D” so  )
If someone can give us a hint of what it means (if it means something)

“There were two projects “Dimensions of Xith” and “Magicosm” which merged July of 2000…”

Thats actually a wrong statement, the projects were merged in July 1999. I need to update that.

I wrote the first implementation of Xith3D when replacing Java3D for Magicosm. When we merged Cosm and Xith together the two projects retained their internal names. So the client game engine is called Xith to this day. Xith3D was a natural extension of that name when I was working on the 3D engine. By the time I opened the project up for open source the name stuck.

In retrospect we could have opened up the name for discussion, but no one seemed to mind.

It is also short, distinctive and has no copyright issues associated with it.

Also sounds cool

Zith-three-dee.

A logo would be cool - if people have the time to make one  I was thinking about whipping something together when I did the xith.org page but decided that I’d rather put some more content up there first.

I like the name, and as you say it’s free from trademark issues which is an important thing these days (bloody US… ;-))

I think we all agree that the name “Xith3D” is great and that’s probably why noone seemed to mind.

OK, so no meaning behind the name, we need to find a nice looking cool logo. Ideas of what it should look like are welcome!
If we’ve got the logo, we’ll have the “powered by” logo asked by Kev ;D

Something professional looking like the OpenGL or Java Coffee Cup - that one can slap at the bottom of web pages, on loading screens and if you are lucky - boxes

Will.

What’s about having a little compo?

If some ppl would donate little prices like a free copy of their upcoming game xy, it will be a piece of cake to get dozens of nice logos to choose from

If so we need a deadline… wich format (vektor based huh?) and so on. The winner could be either voted or picked by the core team.

hehe. how about making an animated 3D logo with Xith
Instead of a GIF on your web page you can have an applet…(kidding)

I would try to do a logo, but I am certain that I have less skill than kevglass in that domain… he at least has two left hands… These things on the ends of my arms aren’t even that good at typing

Ok… what size(s) do we want for the logo?

110x50 max for a webpage tag (matches the Java one)

I guess you want a big one for the website.

Something a little smaller might be nicer to do what AF does on their site.

There isn’t such a thing like size with vektor based formats (therefore I “suggested” it). Vektor based graphics can be scaled to any size - they are always looking sharp and sexy

Here are a bunch of usual dimensions:
Full Banner 468 x 60
Half Banner 234 x 60
Vertical Banner 120 x 240
Button #1 120 x 90
Button #2 120 x 60
Square Button 125 x 125
Micro Button 88 x 31 <- cute

http://java.sun.com/images/get_java_red_button.gif
<- a nice micro button

I think it would be nice to have a 88x31 button, a 120x60 button and something really really big (for scaling to a proper dimension) or just a vektor image (wich is nicer for scaling).

[quote]Which format (vektor based huh?) and so on.

When it comes to vector formats and the web, flash still rules IMHO. I love being able to do graphics/logos like this and then scaling it to pretty much whatever size I need.

But actually coming up with an idea is something else, judging by the xith website you’d need something elegant yet stylish, and like the best logos instantly recognisable without lots of detail…

Unfortunatly a classic capital X appears to be gone

EDIT: Coo, and of course X3D is gone too…

Kev

I had a few spare minutes, so heres some Random ideas. I’m not too happy with any of them, and you’ve got to be careful because if you tinker with an X too much it starts looking like a swastika :o

What about surrounding the X with “i”, “t”, “h” and “3D”, where the “3D” is somewhat emphasized? Just made an image with GIMP:

http://www.xith.org/tutes/filestore/xith3d_logo_125_125.png

(the picture consists of two different text fonts)

Edit: This is just an idea for a logo and not a logo itself.

I guess its just a taste thing, but thats looking a little cluttered to me… hard to make it instantly recognisable.

As I said, only my opinion,

Kev

Fixed.

It was just an idea where to put the letters. I’m not an artist unfortunately. :-/

Where do we find pet artists anyway?

I need an modeller, a pixel artist and a musician… nobody seems to produce stuff for hobby folks.

Understandable I suppose,
