golden t game engine vs gage engine

Hi!

Which is better to make 2D games GTGE (Golden T Game Engine) or GAGE engine? Is GTGE still being developed? The latest version is 0_2_2, but isn’t that considered a bata until 1_0_0? And as for GAGE, has it reached a stable version 1.0 or higher?

I had a feeling when using GTGE that it felt like a complete solution to making my 2D game, however, it felt slightly unflexible. Would GAGE fix this?

And are there any alternatives to the GTGE and GAGE solutions?

And one last thing, one of the reasons I turn to GTGE is because it has addons for hw acceleration in 2D, which is great, but if I use GAGE it seems I don’t have that option and I would have to possibly write my own JOGL | LWJGL code, is there a class in existence that subclasses Graphics2D and gives the user all the benefits that JOGL | LWJGL provide? A class like this could possibly be called JOGLGraphics2D or LWJGLGraphics2D? Is this really possible?

Any help would be greatly apprechiated.

There’s always LWJGL. Personally, I’d advise you to assume you wanted LWJGL first, try to use it for a few weeks, and only then move to a “traditional” engine like GTGE. LWJGL starts with the assumption you want to use hardware-accelerated OpenGL from day one, and lets you do all the free OGL tutorilas on the net, with all the graphical effects you could ever want (including fast transparency, which is NOT POSSIBLE YET in java, without hacks that only work on some HW + JVM-version + OS combinations).

If you find you don’t like it, you can then move back to something like GTGE with a much better idea of what you’ve chosen.

Thanks for the advice!

I think for now at least I’m going to use gtge and see if I can make a game. At that point I will have a better idea how to make my own 2D game engine using LWJGL.

Thanks again!
