Give me a game or program idea!

Hey JGO,

I’ve finally finished my exams a couple of weeks ago, and now I have a 3 month break with nothing much constructive to do (besides a bit of volunteer work).

if anyone has a video game or program idea, something reasonable for my level of experience, I’ll work on getting it done and show the end product, and maybe also make updates on the progress. I have about 3 years of game programming experience in java, which might not be much compared to a lot of people on here, but I can still get things done.

All suggestions are welcome; they may also inspire others here.

Happy holidays everyone!

2D Counter Strike 1.6 web/window game.

The classical answer being, one of the fake Molyneux’s twitters:

I remember Riven made a “game” around one of the ideas with doors and it was… weird.

Make something that you want to play/use.
Maybe something that is a bit challenging so you could also learn something new and develop your skills.

Maybe a top-down shooter or a rpg game(not sure if its too hard with 3 years of experience.)

A game that is pure AI, like chess.

I have done some top-down zombie shooter with a bit more than 1 year or programming. There is no such thing as too hard. You just need to keep the learning curve normal. Don’t jump into 3d right after starting programming  I think you should jump to 3d once you know 2d completely in and out. I think I’m arriving at that point at last!! I really wanted to make mmorpg like runescape. It really brings back memories :stuck_out_tongue: Always wanted to make mmorpg games like old runescape.

Me too! Runescape was one of my favourite games of all time back when I was a newb at it.

Thank’s for the ideas everyone. I’m now trying to decide between a 2D top down shooter or a 2D rpg similar to runescape.

AI seems a bit advanced, especially something like chess. Perhaps something less complex like checkers would be more suitable.

one word… Nukes

Take a look at the Ludum Dare theme slaughter for a ton of game theme ideas: http://www.ludumdare.com/theme/

A Terraria clone would be nice.

I recently got the game (Steam Autumn Sales FTW), I was just too lazy to try making a clone of it :stuck_out_tongue:

Ludum Dare games. Just pick one. Do it with or without time constraints and see what falls out.

Consider all this web html node.js whatever crap too. You can never know to many lanuages or tools.

AI is difficult but not that difficult. Of course that depends on what AI your making but a chess AI only really requires a good understanding of chess strategy. Ive worked on one before, and it was fun, but that could be because I like chess so much.

Then again a RuneScape style game would be awsome!!!
Eiither way keep us updated and good luck!

There are lots of unique old Amiga games, that could be turned into a modern version.
some that come to my mind:

-Interphase
-Tower of Babel (building worlds out of cubic blocks, and running/fighting around in them, how crazy is that)
-Populus 2
-Ports of Call
-Disc
-MoonStone
-Midwinter
-Carrier Command (oops, already done)
-Mercenary 1
-Silkworm
-PP Hammer
-RICK DANGEROUS
-or one of the many puzzle games

I’ve always been a fan of http://www.squidi.net/three/. Some of the ideas are hit or miss, but it can be helpful when you need to brainstorm a new game idea. New stuff gets added from time to time.

Whats for me? I have an idea.

A caterpillar who needs to munch on leaves in order not to starve, while escaping ants and bird attacks.
Followed by a puzzle level to find a safe place for cocooning.

Create a character from the sentence “The one who…” and make a game based on that character. (Not neccessarily the player character.)

For example:

The one who slayed dragons.
The one who walks through fire.
The one who goes mountain climbing in thunderstorms.
The one who stole my cake.
The one who fired an arrow straight up on a calm day.
The one who survived the apocalypse.
Etc.

It can be serious or funny, but still is a great way to get yourself thinking.

Make a game involving music.

Make a game parodying something.

Wow, before I didn’t know what to do because I had no ideas. Now I don’t know what to do because there’s so many.

@SHC: Depends on the idea - how original and interesting it is
