It would be nice if there were genre-specific forums dedicated to development. For example I am developing an RTS game and I would love to have a forum where I could talk with other developers who are specifically interested in that particular genre. I know that there is an RTS showcase forum but I’m not really looking for the showcase at this point–I would like to be able to talk about RTS development itself, such as generating random maps, avoiding squarish tiles, using billboards instead of models, etc.
Not really Java-centric tho’ is it… as it is the “games” section being split up into lots of little subforums has only hurt its popularity. I for one can’t be bothered to dig around in there any more.

I agree. Atomizing the “games” section was a bad idea and splitting other forums into dozens of subforums will be a bad idea too. These forums are not so crowded that this step is needed.
Remember not to confuse a bulletin board for what it is; a bulletin board.
