Ahh geeez! Thanks for beeee-LOOOOOOwing my review out of the water Chris!!

Actually, mine was originally written for my group of developers. So many peeps were “virtual” this year, and my report kept growing and I wanted a couple links eventually I just put it up like a blog post. It was really meant to be as far reaching as Chris’s.

Anyone else got something too?

Josh Slack was our rep this year, and he did a write up for the site:

Neat…

Well… I certainly would be interested in coordinating a tutorial with you (Shawn) for the next GDC or other conferences…

I will be putting out some leading edge tech this year via open source, but some of the more research oriented areas that I’m involved with definitely will be coming to light at the end of this year into '06.

I’ve had a stroke of bad luck this year though. My proposal for presenting ambisonics and real time synthesis research using open source software for game dev was shot down for GDC. Granted the audio track didn’t have that many presentation slots and getting a slot at GDC is fairly political.

Unfortunately my JavaOne proposal was also denied… This is a big bummer considering the “home court” affiliation.

Here is my J1 proposal:

I know there will be nothing like it at J1 this year and few if any other game (graphics / audio) presentations that will cover the advanced ground as outlined…

Now I tried to “go big” with a technical session this year as I have access to the proper resources like a large multichannel audio system suitable for a 500 person room in order to demo and present my work. After being underwhelmed by several “advanced” technical sessions last year at J1 I decided I’d make a grab for one. In hindsight doing another BOF would have been safe… It would have been criminal to deny the above proposal as a BOF.

Anyway, EGR Software is heavily geared towards research and this has been somewhat of a frustrating position to be in and brings to mind a quote from Fred Brooks (Mythical Man-Month); “It takes about 1 hour to develop an in house prototype and 10 hours to bring it to commercial publically applicable software” (paraphrased from memory). I’m between hour 6 & 7 right now and have a wonderful set of internal demos suitable for presentation, but not much public presence via open demos.

To ChrisM. I would still like to be involved in the J1 booth and the JavaGaming townhall this year. I have access and am allied with a top music studio located within walking distance of Moscone center that is just finishing a brand new facility that features a large room with high ceiling and a large high powered 16.8 EAW sound system for full 3D spatialization. This is a cool spot and I’ll have some 3D spatial software to show along with 3D audio enabled game oriented demos.

Beside the studio facility there is ample room to host the townhall. If there is interest I would like to propose that the JavaGaming townhall be turned into a full scale event / party. IE townhall 6-8pm followed by an evening of live music performances / DJs and what not at this most cool facility.

Interested?
