gates planes handheld with games support so maybe ipod should have java?

there is some article in buisnessweek about new microsoft handheld, something like ipod but much more advanced, bigger screen, windows system etc, it will be able to play videos/music and games, but it will not be something like psp, gates want to target it to ipod market which is much bigger than only gaming, so check it out here:
http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/jan2006/tc20060126_148049.htm

and i was thinking about ipod, becouse it is used for plaing mp3, some new version even videos, also has huge disk, becouse can play videos so probably quite good cpu, and the most important: one of the most popular web store for videos/mp3 - itunes. And here comes my idea that maybe apple should enable java for ipod becouse:

  • it will be easier to compete with microsoft handheld (both will have similiar capabilitys)
  • there will be no problems with games distribution (itunes)
  • on start there will be hundreds of java games available in mobile market , also 3d using jsr-184 (M3G)
  • and becouse apple do not like microsoft and also sun has problems with it too, so maybe both sun and applet could destroy that devil

j2me for today phones is only some add-on so the same role will be for ipod, ipod will not evaluate to something like psp machine,
i think that both sun and apple could benefit from it, apple will have $ from games sold through iTunes, and sun from licenses, certification of games…
Today j2me market is very strong on phones, the same situation could be for ipod/handhelds market, which could expand much more when ipod will have gaming capabilitys.

Does any one know Steve Jobs? Does he thought about it? ??? becouse if he will like it maybe he could post me some ipod ;D ;D ;D

You might want to change your topic-title:

“gates plans handheld”

And fix the other typos too, so that we know what you’re talking about

Perhaps.

PortalPlayer, the manufacturer of the iPod chipset, quietly revealed that it has licensed J2ME technologies for inclusion “within its personal media player platforms”, which are “expected to be released in the first half of 2006”.

Not entirely sure if that means a Java-enabled iPod, but it’s interesting nonetheless.

i wish they will use portalplayer new chip with j2me and hotspot, if it will be true it will be cool thing for us, but what i am worring is that they have not write anything about aditinal extensions for their implementation like m3g or other, but maybe in future we will know something more . Also i found somwhere that new portalplayer chip PP5022 will have also Bluetooth suport, so some more exting games could be made

thanks Falken and Riven

You’re a little behind with the news - the thing the article talks about has since been announched and is the “Origami”. It’s basically a tablet PC but somewhat smaller than the regular ones. Since it uses WinXP Tablet edition Java works just fine (LWJGL too ;D )

Ummmm…

The PSP addresses gaming AND this market.

My PSP is my MP3 and portable movie player as well as my [portable game box.

In fact, I currently msotly use it for movies…
