Gandalf 4k

Having seen how fantastic Kappa’s shoota was I thought I’d have a go. Gandalf 4k is a robotron style game (its not quite Ultratron tho ;))

Gandalf is stuck in the mines of Moria and has to fight off the evil goblins using only his magical prowess!

WASD - Move
Cursors - Shoot

The golins (actually orcs) will come from all directions. The odd troll might turn up too. The blue bar shows your magic which will go down as you shoot and slowly recharge. The red bar shows your health. If any of the bad guys get to you they’ll explode (against your magic shield) which hurts!

Thanks for your comments on the LadyBug game. Where is the link for this Game?

Doh, updated the post at the top…

Getting tired

Kev

The fireball and explosion animations are particularly good. Is the explosion a bitmap or procedural?

Alan

Intense and plays a great

PS: I think I am being followed…

Procedural. You can see what images are bitmaps by downloading the JAR and extracting the “d” file. Rename it to “d.gif” and you can look at it. It’s the same trick Kev used in Hack4K. Works well for two or three images.

“d.png”

Kev

Too bad key mapping is WASD , on my french keyboard, I need two hands to move (and I haven’t got a third one to fire !) ;D

here’s my layout :

AZERTY…
-QSDFGH…
–WXCVB…

Cheers, I dug it out of the webstart cache.

very cute game!
btw: did you ever notice that the almighty gandalf did nothing that spectacular in the movies?
no orc was hit by a fireball and even for the ringghosts he behaved only something like a mobile
light tower … ::slight_smile:

I hate you Kev. I came to my job, im very busy i HAVE to work, but i stumbled upon this shooter and kill orcs & goblins instead of my tasks. Bosses increase gameplay a lot. This game have a soul. Few different levels and its ready for… something…

Awesome game as ever, I can’t believe this. Oh well.

Two things:

  1. The lower limit for the player is too low; you can go outside the visible area.
  2. It’s almost impossible to run out of ammo, mana, magic, whatever you call it. Make each shot require more.

Great game - impressive graphics!

woah! impresive, as allways ^^

Coo, thanks for the positive feedback and bug finds

I’m considering moving fire control to the mouse and movement to the cursors, any opinions?

This one is pretty close to the limit so I’m not sure if I can extend it much more.

Kev

Sounds like a good idea, but I’m guessing it would make the game easier, so make sure to balance it

amazing game plays great and is a great blast. need goblins that fire arrows (as in the movie) ;D

also found a very nice cheat, what you do it don’t shoot any goblins, just circle around all the monsters and eventually they all bunch up on one place, then just blast the bunch and they all die! lots of potential here though.

Tried moving to mouse, game got too easy and couldn’t fit it without losing other stuff :frowning:

Fixed the Kapta bug - one shot = one enemy now

Changed the magic usage balance to make it a bit harder.

Kev

PS. Top Score anyone?

kevglass - told you
You could have far more enemies and move it to mouse. Either way, I’d like to see it a bit faster or with more enemies. As it is now, I can continue playing until I get bored, and I don’t have the time and will to try and get a highscore. It’s an awesome game, but it’s too slow for me (sure, after a while it gets tricky and I have to move all the time, but by then I’m usually bored, and there’s no time to fire = no events).

Please make it harder.

EDIT: Highscore for first serious attempt was around 26k for me.

EDIT 2: Oh, the magic usage… You can still hold down the button and fire at allmost full speed while having no magic. You should make it so that each shot requires even more

Another update… more enemies, upped quicker, less magic, faster bad guys, more pain.

Kev

Much better. I’ve found that not shooting diagonal shots saves magic though, because you always fire one shot in a non-diagonal direction first, which might miss. Perhaps numpad is the solution? Not sure.
