Gametrailer - How to?

I would like to produce a high-quality/fun gametrailer for my upcoming game. So far I used CamStudio to record the game-play which worked great. However, I would like to add more including title, sound track etc. Do you guys have any advice?

What software do I use to capture, edit the video, add a custom sound track etc?

For basic video editing (cutting together clips or stills, adding sound, titles, etc.) Windows Movie Maker is surprisingly adequate.

(If you’re using Windows 7 you might want to download the older version of the software since the newest “Live” version is something of a backwards step. If you’re not using Windows then, sorry, can’t help.)

Yes, I got Windows 7! I used Windows Movie Maker before, just never for games. What’s missing on the Windows Movie Maker that’s available for Windows 7?

Camtasta Studio is a must.

I can’t remember. ::slight_smile: I used the ‘Live’ (Win7) version briefly on a friend’s machine, and persuaded him to install the old version instead. This link should do the job (even though it claims to only be for Vista).

Fraps for Recording

Sony Vegas for editing. If you got a Mac use Final Cut Pro

iMovie is fine, too. Simple. If you can get your hands on the old iMove it’s actually more powerful.

I like to use Sony Vegas. However, you get no camera with that, and only a bad implementation of the z-layer (Of course there is layers like in Photoshop, but if need to have a 3D object which is not a clip, you’re screwed).
There is also no particles or such in Vegas.

AfterFX. Not really cheap ($999): http://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffects/whatisaftereffects/
but if you know someone who has it or you don’t mind buying it, it’s a very powerful tool.
Check http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/ if you want to see how it works and how powerful it is.

I’ve bought CS3 Production Premium Package some years ago (Student Version) for ~310€ and it’s worth it

Thanks for the feedback everyone! ;D

Anyhow, I went with CamStudio and Microsoft Movie Maker. It’s not great but better than nothing:
