Games4j.com

So, I will try again and see if I can create some more debacle!

Just kidding. Last thread got quite far of the track, so I just wanted to start a new one and hope that it will stay a bit focused.

I read through the feedback that I got and found that most of it was regarding the look, so I just hope that the rest is sort of in order, so I have now had an overhaul of the look of the site. It is still the same general structure, but look is quit different, and maybe a bit more edgy, but I still try to keep the games in focus. Still work left to do, but looks more like a gaming site now.

The registration and submission is also a bit changed, so do sign up if you haven’t done so and play a few games and let me know what you think of the changes.

Since some got confused in the last crossfire here is a quick recap. Games4j.com:

  • A site that hosts your applet, flash and silverlight games
  • 51% revenue share for all games sent in by jgo members during beta period.
  • You can ad a link to your own site if you like and generate more traffic there as well.
  • Get feedback and rating from gamers
  • Your games are still 100% yours, and you can do whatever you want with them outside of games4j.com
  • A set of common libraries will be at the server. That will speed up startup time for games and reduce number of popup dialogs displayed

So have a look at the site and let me know what you think, and submit some games to the site.

Looks a lot nicer, keep up with the good work.
Does this support uploads of JavaFX applets? They use a jnlp file.

You’ve decided to support both Flash and Applets now?

Hey, that’s cool!

Thanks.

Yes, I don’t see any drawback really with allowing more platforms. The only problem is that I don’t have a highscore API ready for other platforms than applets right now, so changes will have to be made to flash games for example to use highscores later on. Not really a biggie, but that is why I don’t push for that right now. More platforms means more traffic to the site and that should be better for for java devs. On the other hand we want the experience to be as pleasant as possible for gamers, so a friendly and somewhat standard way of playing games is best.

So basically any way that the gamers can enjoy game entertainment in the browser is welcome, meaning Java applets, Java FX running in browser, flash and silverlight are the main candidates. You as a dev get to submit the tag that runs the game, so it is very flexible. I will then just make sure that nobody is trying to insert evil code and then make it visible to the general public.

lwjgl and slick applets are also very welcome. In as much as possible we will try to use one signature, to keep the popups to a minimum. The first lwjgl game was submitted yesterday, Hexx.

Anyway, hope that clears it up a bit.

Keep sending in games and give feedback!

Blarg no Silverlight, I’ll never be able to play those.

Are you maybe going to change the name of your domain because it’s not just Java anymore?

Does anyone really know what the “j” stands for? 8)

Well, games are categorized, so planning to be able to filter what games you get to see.

Ah, forgot what I was going to say…

Added instructions on how to use the highscore API for applets:

Go nuts woogley!

GAMES4jojoh?

Dang, that was supposed to be a secret  Now I HAVE to change it!

But yes, I am thinking about changing it. We will see.

Could call it games4all.com or games4browsers.com
Since your targeting more then just Java now.

games4j(ava).com

I originally wanted the site to contain just Java games, and with a strict quality control, e.g. only allow selected individuals, on an invite-only basis, to submit their games.

The flaw with the current Games4j.com is that it tries to do too much with too little. I’d rather recognize that we have very little, but use whatever we have to make the most out of it.

I think it would have been better to make a top-notch Java Applet game portal site where only a few good game creators would be able to put up their best games. With Java games, quality control matters the most, not quantity, IMO.

But jojoh, older and wiser than me, didn’t agree, so I distanced myself from the project and let him do it however he wanted. ;D Hopefully it works out!

Well there should be some quality control but I don’t know if I agree with strict.

Can always make another ::slight_smile:

51% revenue share for all games sent in by jgo members during beta period. ;D

Beat that if you can

Don’t think there is a better offer around!

Yeah, don’t see any better ones. We’re beat!

Is your ad sharing thing running already?

But of course! 8)

Just a quick update of what has been going on with games4j.com

I have been doing mostly “behind the scene” work, but some things that you can see as well, such as improved the look a bit, added possibility to send messages between users, improved the API for storing and getting highscores, making the site a bit clearer and easier to navigate and understand, improved the way games are submitted.

Mostly I have been working on the business side of things and we will probably have one more person working with us from September on.

A few games from Notch aka Markus Pärsson, has been added to the site! Go check them out.

If you have any applet games laying around, then do send them in to the site, or if you know some good applet games that aren’t on the site, let me know.

Greets,
Joakim

Let me know if you any of these take ur fancy and will put them up (5 puzzle, and 3 quiz applets).

Sorry for long delay! Been away on vacation without computer 8)

Yes, definitely go ahead and upload them all, it is quite quick and easy. I actually like RevolvoMan the most, even though it is just 4k. The top 3 are the ones I played longest.
