GameForum news

While I try not to use the forums for shameless self promotion, I’ve setup a webserver and I’m running a forum site that’s dedicated entirely to the subject of game design.

It’s open to the public, but I’m taking this opportunity to personally invite each and every one of you who might be interested.

The site and the forums are brand-spanking new (as in, the “live” version of them only became available within the last 45 minutes), so don’t expect to see a lot of users right away. I’m working on the email problem right now, so that email notification and a number of other features will work properly.

Enjoy!

On these forums I’m known as Normalocity.

EDIT: Removed an out-of-date URL

port 1010 is blocked at most university/work firewalls. Perhaps it would be wise to use the standard port 80, if your ISP does not allow it. Its because they dont want to host webservers. Try to get it hosted somewhere

[quote]Yeah, sigh, I realize that. I definitely want to move it to a real server eventually, but for now it’s all I’ve got.

Why not just keep the discussion HERE?

You could also do 8080 or port 81 if you have to.

Partly, it’s because this site tends to attrach a developer crowd, and I’m trying to attract a much more diverse group of people. This is a relatively small pool of people from which to draw ideas and talent. I don’t think game design has one single thing to do with programming - instead I would say that the way you program a game has everything to do with its design.

Also (and you’ll see what I mean if you go to the forums), it is an entire site dedicated to game design discussion. It’s much more in-depth than our SINGLE “Game Play / Design” forum.

True. Thought I don’t see what difference it makes.

Port 80 and 8080 aren’t blocked normally, thats the difference.

Oh . Well, that’s a good point. I’ll setup the server to listen on that port as well (I’ve already given out the URL for the other port), and I’ll cut over to 8080 exclusively in the next month.

So then, this URL should do the job then.

Just as a last note, I wanted to let everyone know that the forum is working properly now, and that the e-mail notification is working perfectly.

Thanks for all the support and technical expertise over the years from JGO and its members. I’ll still be around, of course, and I expect to send many a game designer back to this forum to find people to implement their games.

Enjoy the forums (they’re open to the public), and continue to “Make better games.”

Just wanted to thank the members we’ve got already, and encourage more people to come. Our first of many monthly articles to come is up on the forums dicussing how a designer (non-programmer-type) might get about making their game idea into reality, which of course involves teaming up with programmer-types like the peeps here.

Given the content and lack of enthusiasm for a game design-dedicated forum (this ain’t the only place people have asked “Why are you doing this, again?”), we’re donig quite well.

Make better games!
Up the Irons!

Greetings to all, and a belated happy holidays.

Our membership over at GameForum has been growing in the last couple of months - to a whopping 9 people! Well, I’m excited at any growth obviously

I’d like to mention a new project being discussed on the site, a survival horror game being developed by one of our members, called Perfect Serenity. They’ve got a site up about it already, and things are going well.

You can go directly to the developer’s site here:
http://www.nadcom.co.uk

And check out the related discussion going on at GameForum here:

We’ve also recently added 7 new skins for registered users to choose from, in order to rid the site of the “this smacks of a phpBB default forum look”. So, I’d like to extend an invitation to everyone to join up in the discussion, and check out the rest of GameForum while you’re at it.
