Game Sound effects?

I’m in that TAFSJ thing and I am going well with my game but it sounds very boring without sound effects…
I only need a tank shot sound and an explosion sound

Things I have tried:

  • googling… but must explosion sounds are very long and designed for movies… I only want a few seconds
  • SFXR, BFXR, etc… But I don’t like the randomness (I has a bit of OCD) and when I try nice numbers like 0.3 or 0.5… it messes up the sound all together

So does anybody know where I can get a tank shot sound and an explosion sound?

Thx in advance

Try FreeSound

I use Bfxr

If a free effect is “too long,” you should still be able to trim it to size with a tool such as Audacity. I think it’s possible to apply a lot of effects: filtering, compression, maybe even pitch shifting. Take one of your long explosions and put a volume taper on it to cut it down to size.

Another possibility for explosions: take a bullet, and slow it down. It is a little muffled (process loses the top octaves of high end), but that is okay for explosions in the distance. I did this on an applet I posted once here, building automatic gunfire, rifle fire, various mortars and bombs all from a single clip played at different speeds. I wonder if it still is around and runs!

You will probably get a hundred warning messages if you try and run it. The file should be safe, though.

I think I got the gunshot from soundsnap.com, but had to trim the file to isolate a single shot.

Could also get the demo of your DAW of choice and use that, for instance FL Studio demo is free and the only limitation is not being able to open previously saved projects, which wouldn’t be a big deal if you’re just processing some one-off sound files. I believe the situation is similar for other DAWs.
That said I simply own FL, so I just use that for everything.

Reaper is a little different as it works on the honor system, the demo version is fully functional and never expires. Definitely worth checking out, it is an awesome DAW!
